Film Score Friday 9/3/99
by Lukas Kendall
There will be a score album for For Love of the Game (Basil Poledouris)
on Varese Sarabande.
Here's what's up with Rykodisc, as several people have noticed that
their website no longer lists any soundtracks (like For Your Eyes Only)
on their upcoming schedule. Rykodisc is relocating from Salem, MA to New
York City and that is delaying many of their projects. As far as I know,
NOTHING is canceled, just postponed. We moved recently here at FSM so we
know what it's like (it sucks).
Regarding The Ninth Gate (Wojciech Kilar), which we mentioned
last Friday, Silva Screen has released the album in the U.K.
As we sadly noted in August, longtime FSM reader and film music whiz
Guy McKone passed away on August 6, 1999. If you want to pass on condolences
to his friends and family, here's the email address: nmacpherson@city.stratford.on.ca
Sixth Sense
In response to Michael
Matessino's column on Wednesday -- warning, possible SPOILERS!!
From: Jeff Commings, Jeffswim@aol.com
In response to Michael Matessino's article on why The Sixth sense
is so popular:
I can readily think of another recent movie where the second viewing
totally changes your perception: The Crying Game. Think about it: once
you know "the secret" you can see the undermining parts of the
film, like the unconditional friendship between Jimmy/Fergus and Dil and
the trap Fergus is forever set in by the IRA. When I saw it the second/third/fourth
time, it was interesting to see audience reaction, and to see other layers
of the film. The same rings true for The Sixth Sense. Once you feel the
setup and premise and piece the film together you get the pace of the film
and its purpose.
One more thing: HALEY JOEL OSMENT FOR BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR OSCAR!

Arrived back from holiday last night to find Monte Walsh CD waiting
for me. I have just played it and have found it to be wonderful. Marvellous
themes, a great title song. This is Barry at his best IMO. Many thanks
for getting this one finally released. I look forward to future Silver
Age releases. If you could manage an extended 'Mary, Queen of Scots' or
'The Dove' I would really appreciate it!.
Thanks once again for 'Monte Walsh'
Poseidon Lengths?

Several years ago, THE POSEIDEN ADVENTURE was shown as part of a
film class at USC. As it is one of my all-time favorites, I went to the
screening. Not only were there a few scenes which you mentioned, but there
were a few scenes deleted including Scott's lament over the dead Belle.
It would be a joy if 20th Century Fox could restore this film for DVD.
Maybe even do a documentary as the majority of the principals are still
alive (rare after 25+ years). Though the great Irwin Allen is gone, director
Ronald Neame is still going strong at close to 90!
While we're on the subject, Fox could also do the same for THE TOWERING
INFERNO. When it was first shown on TV, many deleted scenes were restored
to fill a 2 night viewing. Unlike EARTHQUAKE which filmed a whole new subplot
2 years after the film's release (!), Inferno's scenes were done at the
time and add different facets to the characters. There were scenes of Jennifer
Jones and Fred Astaire at the beginning which established their relationship,
etc. I remember a scene with William Holden and Susan Blakeley as his daughter
that added compassion to the former's greedy developer role. With everything
else getting the deluxe treatment, why not do these 2 films which were
quite popular in their day and which still have many devoted fans.

In response to Berkart's query regarding the different versions
of poseidon Adventure: I've no idea what the explanation is, but I did
want to remark on how totally amazed I am at his/her ability to sit through
that turkey so many times!
Happy Labor Day!
Celebrate work by not working -- that's our plan here at FSM.
