Film Score Friday 2/4/00
by Lukas Kendall
The big news this week is that Decca will release a CD of the original
soundtrack to JAWS, produced by Laurent Bouzereau and Shawn Murphy, who
worked on the expanded E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind CDs.
The existing album to Jaws is a re-recording which Williams did at the
time of the movie; it's a great album that expands on the OST cues and
makes them more fleshed out. Still, it will be great to hear the OST after
all these years. The only thing not known is whether or not the new CD
will combine the existing album and the unreleased original soundtrack
(which would be ideal) or if it will be solely the unreleased stuff.
Speaking of Williams, he will be with the ShoWest's inaugural Maestro
Award by the National Association of Theatre Owners at their annual convention,
March 6-9 in Las Vegas. Also, rumors are that he will be scoring The Patriot
for Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, instead of their usual composer, David
Arnold. Frankly I wouldn't be sure of anything right now. We could make
a long list of movies that Williams was "supposed" to score but
didn't -- probably longer than some composers' real filmographies!
If you tune in to the premiere of the NBC supernatural series The
Others this Saturday you'll hear a new score by Shirley Walker, for
the producers of Space: Above and Beyond.

No News Is... No News
We're making the rounds right now calling all the record labels and
agencies we know to get movie music updates. So hopefully we'll have some
cool stuff to report by this time this week. Thanks, and excuse the shortness
of this particular column. Finally...

Again, our apologies to message board users for pulling the rug out
from under you. We're presently moving our website from one hosting company
to another and have had to disable the message board. There's no way around
it -- sorry! We hope to have everything up and running shortly and will
give regular updates as to our progress.
Have a good weekend!
