Goldsmith Concert
From: Ben Tunningley <Ben.Tunningley@Clever.co.uk>
Just thought you should know that Jerry Goldsmith gave a stunning
concert at London's Barbican Centre last night, conducting the London Symphony
Orchestra.
The LSO were on fine form: sensitive and beautiful on "Rudy",
outrageously bombastic on "The Generals" suite. As well as plenty
of his own work, some of which featured in last year's 70th Birthday Tour,
they played work by Alex North ("Viva Zapata"), Alfred Newman
("All About Eve") and Rozsa ("Ben Hur"). The finale
was Goldsmith's "Fireworks (A Celebration of Los Angeles)" composed
last year for his performance at the Hollywood Bowl. Does anyone know if
this has been recorded and released?
Anyway, it's back to the Barbican tonight for an evening of "Star
Trek and the World of Fantasy", Goldsmith-style.
Ben sent this email after the next night's concert:
From: Ben Tunningley <Ben.Tunningley@Clever.co.uk>
Jerry Goldsmith performed with the LSO for the second and last performance
of this whistle stop tour. He mentioned having just finished recording
the score for Paul Verhoeven's "The Hollow Man" (lots of "crash
bang") at Abbey Road so I guess that's why he's still here.
The theme for the evening was "Star Trek and the World of Fantasy",
and the first half comprised seven pieces for various incarnations of Trek.
As always, the Motion Picture title was a real work-out for the orchestra.
Jerry said he never really 'got' Star Trek, but it's very popular so that's
okay. Also, he mentioned that he'd never done such a large chunk of Trek
in one concert.
The second half covered his other fantasy work, from Capricorn One
and Alien to Powder and The Mummy. It was very well received by an audience
having a lot of fun.
One thing of note. He mentioned that he's been recording for a new
Phillips sound system which is just about to launch. It takes advantage
of the 5.1 audio set-ups that are becoming popular for DVD playback, and
he said that both he and the orchestra consider the results to be phenomenal.
He was vague, but it sounds like he's recorded all this latest concert
material, as well as "Music for Orchestra" and other non-film
work. And yes, they did record "Fireworks".
Whether this release will be exclusively on the new format, or whether
on DVD or CD remains to be seen.

I am blown away by this program and wish I could have attended the concerts
-- particularly the second one. This is the first time Goldsmith has ever
done many of his dramatic underscore masterpieces -- like "The Enterprise"
-- in concert (to my knowledge, at least). It's bizarre because for years
he has played a lot of the same things and only recently in FSM we gave
him some concert "advice" -- basically play the dramatic stuff,
don't worry about the pops aspect. For whatever reason -- whim, need of
two-nights of material, or whatever -- he has finally tried it out some
of the cooler stuff. Not that he could have possibly read Jeff Bond's "advice"
article, but I'm glad he experimented and I hope he does more of the challenging
dramatic cues in the future.
The news on his new CD recordings is great too.
