The Patriot Addendum
by Lukas Kendall
We reported last Friday that David Arnold had written and recorded a
full score to The Patriot that had been rejected, with John Williams
hired to write a replacement. Filmforce quickly posted a rebuttal article
stating that, according to Centropolis, Arnold had written and recorded
only a demo theme and perhaps a few demo cues before being dismissed (http://filmforce.ign.com/news/324.html).
Well, they're right. We regret the error.
We did check with our sources about Filmforce's reporting:
"There have also been significant and repeated indications that
Arnold's non-participation on The Patriot was merely a confluence of happenstantial
timing, events, and decisions. I.E. no falling out, arguments, difficult
rejections, etc. appear to be involved between Arnold and Centropolis."
... and can say that disapproval of Arnold's music WAS a factor in his
departure. What are the filmmakers going to tell Internet reporters? "We
fired him because his score stunk, even though he's our friend, and John
Williams can do a much better one." No, of course not, they're going
to invoke vagaries of politics, schedules, etc. -- some of which are true
but obscure the issue.
