MUSIC OF THE SPHERES, PART TWO

A few readers wrote in to mention scores that they felt I'd unfairly omitted from Part One of this article. Actually, they wrote in to mention only two scores -- The Day the Earth Stood Still (suggested by Miguel Andrade and Ken Longworth) and the original version of The Thing (suggested by Bob Bryden and Tim Vila).

I intended this series of articles to cover only films that take place partly in space or on other worlds, and both of the aforementioned movies take place exclusively on Earth (I don't count the opening credits of Day the Earth Stood Still). However, they will both be featured in my upcoming article, They Came From the Scoring Stage, a chronology of scores for movies about aliens on earth.

Also, Originalthinkr@aol.com wrote in to correct my spelling -- the composer of Rocketship X-M (and, of course, the Grand Canyon Suite) is Ferde Grofe, not Groefe.

"GALACTICA 1990" - Stu Philips
The four-disc Battlestar Galactica composer promo features 2:52 of Philips music from this short-lived sequel series

SATURN 3 - Elmer Bernstein
A synth performance of 4:04 of the score was featured on the GNP Crescendo CD Greatest Sci-Fi Hits vol. 4

HEAVY METAL - Elmer Bernstein
The score was released on LP in 1981 but has yet to see a CD release; 5:38 of the score was rerecorded for the Silva CD Space and Beyond, while 4:56 was conducted by Bernstein himself for his Denon CD, Bernstein by Bernstein.

OUTLAND - Jerry Goldsmith
The score was released by GNP Crescendo, paired with Goldsmith's score for Capricorn One.

SUPERMAN II - Ken Thorne, John Williams
The score was released on a Warners CD in Japan, paired with songs and score selections from Superman III.

THE DARK CRYSTAL - Trevor Jones
The score was released on LP in 1982; Numenorean Records has announced an expanded CD release due shortly
