New FSM CDs: Farewell, Gladiators
CDs now available!
Film Score Monthly's new limited edition CDs are a sterling
doubleheader by David Shire and one of the most-requested Biblical scores
of all time.
Silver Age Classics: Farewell,
My Lovely/Monkey Shines
This new CD combines two excellent David Shire scores full of melody
and intrigue. Farewell, My Lovely is the 1975 remake of the classic
noir film, Murder, My Sweet, for which Shire provided one of the
finest pieces of symphonic film jazz of the 1970s. The main theme easily
ranks amongst such classics as Chinatown, Taxi Driver and Body
Heat for its smoky sadness and mystery. Farewell, My Lovely
was previously available on a United Artists LP and FSM retains the album
sequencing (in better sound quality), adding one track of previously unreleased
music. One of the best soundtrack LPs of the 1970s is presented in digital
at last.
Monkey Shines is a 1988 George Romero thriller about a quadriplegic
whose relationship with a trained monkey goes wildly out of control. Despite
the claustrophobic settings, Shire provided several memorable melodies
and maintained a thematic approach throughout, scoring the film's various
transformations from joy to terror and back again. The Monkey Shines
score has never been released; the composer specially arranged this
premiere presentation.

Golden Age Classics: Demetrius
and the Gladiators
Demetrius and the Gladiators is the 1954 sequel to 20th Century
Fox's 1953 introduction of CinemaScope, The Robe. Victor Mature
stars as a Christian in ancient Rome whose faith is tested by the arena
of the gladiators. For the music, the film featured a fascinating collaborative
situation in which Franz Waxman utilized Alfred Newman's themes from The
Robe amidst his all-new music. From religious fury and glory to the
madness of the emperor Caligula -- and the action-packed gladitorial arena
-- Demetrius is a legendary score from Hollywood's Golden Age.
FSM's CD restoration features almost the entire Demetrius score
(some tracks are presented in a "bonus" section), with choir and "sweeteners"
intact, in the best-possible stereo sound.
