At this weekend's San Diego
Comic Con, look for the gang from Film Score Monthly (at least, Lukas,
Jeff, and Joe Sikoryak) at the CFQ Media booth (booth #3820, to be exact),
selling our CDs -- regular prices, but three discs for $50.
This August, Perseverance
Records will follow up their CD to John Gale's score for Dr. Phibes
Rises Again with Basil Kirchin's score for its predecessor,
THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES. The disc will also feature Kirchin's
music for 1966's THE SHUTTERED ROOM, an H.P. Lovecraft adaptation
starring Gig Young, Carol Lynley and Oliver Reed.
For those who have been concerned about the lack of upcoming
releases on the Varese
Sarabande website, the label has eased all our fears by announcing
four new score CDs due this August.
On August 19th, they will release Graeme Revell's score to the
inevitable FREDDY VS. JASON, whose amusing adline is "Winner Kills
All" but might as well be "Finally!" The film's director, Ronny Yu, previously
collaborated with Revell on the oddly delightful Bride of Chucky,
which featured one of the best sex scenes between evil possessed dolls
ever captured on film.
The same day sees the score for another high profile teaming, Ben Affleck
and Jennifer Lopez in Martin Brest's GIGLI, with a score by John
Powell (replacing the originally announced Carter Burwell). The film
was briefly retitled Tough Love and had a long post-production period,
and the poster pretty much tells nothing about the film except that it
stars Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez.
Also on the 19th is Harry Gregson-Williams' score for PASSIONADA,
a romantic comedy starring Jason Isaacs and Sofia Milos, about a family
of Portuguese women living in New England. Gregson-Williams collaborated
with Passionada director Dan Ireland previously on the wonderful
The Whole Wide World, a little seen romantic drama which starred
Renee Zellweger as a young women who fell in love with Robert E. Howard
(Vincent D'Onofrio), the author of the Conan stories.
One week later, Varese will release Bennett Salvay's score to
JEEPERS CREEPERS 2. This sequel stars Ray Wise (unforgettable as
Leland Palmer on Twin Peaks) and a bunch of actors playing high
school students.
The Image label has released the cast album to Michel
Legrand's Tony-nominated but short lived Broadway musical AMOUR,
starring Malcolm Gets and Melissa Errico.
Two recent CDs may interest fans of British film composers.
White Line has released BRITISH FILM COMPOSERS IN CONCERT, with
Gavin Sutherland conducting the Royal Ballet Sinfonia performing concert
(that is, non-film) pieces by Clifton Parker, Leighton Lucas, Anthony Collins,
Bruce Montgomery and Eric Rogers.
The French label Tricatel has released THE DAVID WHITAKER SONGBOOK,
a compilation of recordings composed and produced by the British composer.
It includes four cues from Run Wild, Run Free and one each from
Hammerhead, Dominique, and the acclaimed recent French thriller
With a Friend Like Harry (aka Harry -- He's Here to Help),
as well as cues from the album "Music to Spy By" and songs by artists such
as Nico and Marianne Faithfull. The only drawback is that some of the cues,
especially parts of Run Wild, Run Free, have been taken from far-from-pristine
vinyl sources.
The English language version of the Portuguese film music
website ScoreTrack.Net will be online this Saturday, July 19th, and features
exclusive content such as an interview with Marco Beltrami and a review
of his soundtrack to Terminator 3. The site can be accessed at www.scoretrack.net
by just clicking on "Music for Movies" or "English Language Site".

DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?
THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN - Trevor Jones
"Trevor Jones' score rumbles with ominous vigor behind much of the action."
Todd McCarthy, Variety
NORTHFORK - Stuart Matthewman
"The wide, austere countryside, beautifully shot in washed-out CinemaScope
(by M. David Mullen, who also worked with the Polishes on their previous
features), is as still and silent as an old photograph, and the score (by
Stuart Matthewman, another Polish brothers regular) is like an eerie electronic
echo of Aaron Copland."
A.O. Scott, New York Times
"Complementing the film's shifting moods is Stuart Matthewman's score;
alternately and sometimes simultaneously witty and nostalgic, it incorporates
several vintage country and western songs."
Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL - Klaus Badelt
"There comes a moment quite early in "Pirates of the Caribbean: The
Curse of the Black Pearl" when the score swells more than an agitated sea.
A handsome, humble blacksmith by the name of Will Turner has just presented
a sword to the governor of Port Royal, a beautiful perch above a Caribbean
coast. Gov. Swann (Jonathan Pryce) plans to give the blade to the suitor
of his daughter, the soon-to-be commodore Norrington. While the governor
admires the craftsmanship, his lovely daughter, Elizabeth (Keira Knightley),
comes down the staircase. Turner (Orlando Bloom), watches her descend.
Cue the sentimental music. Just as the thought begins to dawn that the
orchestration is nudging a bit too hard, the score (helmed by Hans Zimmer
[sic]) switches to something even more bombastic. And the scene cuts to
a too-proud pirate coming into port on a steadily listing boat. The master
of this miserable, downright sinking vessel is Captain Jack Sparrow, played
by Johnny Depp."
