Film Score Monthly's new limited edition CDs feature classic '70s
science fiction scores and a sweeping doubleheader by Miklos Rozsa:
Silver
Age Classics: SOYLENT GREEN/DEMON SEED
FSM adds to its library of sci-fi soundtracks with provocative music
from 1970s M-G-M films: Soylent Green and Demon Seed.
Soylent Green (1973) stars Charlton Heston as a detective in
a dystopian, overcrowded future, who discovers the shocking truth behind
the society's precious foodstuff. Fred Myrow (1939-1999) provided an imaginative,
pop-based main title, futuristic-sounding source cues, and strange, atmospheric
moods for the underscore. The CD includes Myrow's original, unused music
for Edward G. Robinson's death sequence, as well as the actual classical
works conducted by Gerald Fried for the finished film. The Soylent Green
portion of the CD is entirely in stereo.
Demon Seed (1977) stars Julie Christie as the wife of a scientist
(Fritz Weaver) terrorized by the man's supercomputer creation. Jerry Fielding's
avant garde score for orchestra and electronics features eerie suspense
and violence as well as musique concrète soundscapes. FSM's premiere
release features the entire orchestral score in stereo, as well as electronic
cues (some of which were not used) in mono and stereo.

Golden
Age Classics: KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE/THE KING'S THIEF
This 2CD set features Miklos Rozsa scores for chivalrous knights and
dashing swordsmen: Knights of the Round Table and The King's
Thief.
Knights of the Round Table (1953) was a colorful telling of the
legendary Arthur-Guinevere-Lancelot love triangle. Rozsa provided a complex
score for large orchestra, with bountiful themes for knights and ladies,
and extended action cues for sprawling battles. A previous release of Knights
on Varese Sarabande was an English recording not used in the film. FSM's
CD features the premiere release of the original film soundtrack as conducted
by Miklos Rozsa (and to a lesser extent John Green) in Los Angeles.
The King's Thief (1955) was a late attempt at the swashbuckling
genre. Rozsa rose to the occasion with a majestic main theme and rollicking
action cues, as well as romance.
FSM's premiere release of both Rozsa gems features the complete underscore
to Knights of the Round Table on disc one; and the complete underscore
to The King's Thief; alternate and source cues from The King's
Thief; and then alternate and source cues from Knights of the Round
Table on disc two. Both CDs are entirely in stereo and come packaged
in a regular-sized jewel box.
