47 RONIN

Music Composed by
Ilan Eshkeri
(Coriolanus, Kick-Ass)

Keanu Reeves makes an explosive return to action-adventure in 47 RONIN. After a treacherous warlord kills their master and banishes their kind, 47 leaderless samurai vow to seek vengeance and restore honor to their people. Driven from their homes and dispersed across the land, this band of ronin must seek the help of Kai (Reeves) — a half-breed they once rejected — as they fight their way across a savage world of mythic beasts, shape-shifting witchcraft and wondrous terrors.

As this exiled, enslaved outcast becomes their most deadly weapon, he will transform into the hero who inspires this band of outnumbered rebels to seize eternity.

Composer Ilan Eshkeri’s (Kick-Ass) epic score offers a powerful and exotic mix of cello, percussion and flute with symphony orchestra, capturing all the color, action, emotion and drama of the story.

Universal Pictures will open 47 RONIN?nationwide on December 25.

Hell yes! Looking forward to seeing what Eshkeri can do with this. The movie looks interesting as well.

That description by Varese reminds me of the music for Last Samurai. If it is anything like that then I am definitely interested. Hopefully it is not a temp-track-driven feast though, especially since two composers had their works thrown out of this film already.

I've got high hopes for the score. For the film, not so much. I do find Eshkeri a very frustrating composer. He can sometimes knock it out of the park -- his short score for Austenland earlier this year is simply delightful, one of my favorites of the year -- but is also very often in situations where he's either comfortable to or asked to churn out extremely generic or derivative stuff. Here's hoping for an end-of-year surprise from him.

Varese's descriptions suck as much as their packagings. Nobody does it better than Intrada.

Varese under its new ownership is interested in licensing the music (for which they own the rights), which is why they give descriptions like "kick-ass" to the music.
When some producer tells his office junior to go out and find a selection of "kick-ass" music for his ad or game or whatever, he can go through Varese's descriptions and get audition material for those kinds of recordings to give to his boss as something to choose from.
Not much different to any other professional music library/agency really. Only instead of offering generic library material like, say, DeWolfe, they offer what passes as "real" music on the basis that it's actually been used in a film and belongs to them.
A music farm.

Basil, your assertions are not backed up by anything in this thread or related to this release. This is precisely the same product description format Varèse has been using for more than a decade, and the "Kick-Ass" in parentheses after the composer's name is referring to the face that Eshkeri composed music for the movie Kick-Ass.

The fact this Varese blurb tells me there is an "exotic mix of cello, percussion and flute with symphony orchestra" is a bit more than some of their usual descriptions.
And yes, they are referring to the fact that Eshkeri was one of the co-composers on the film KICK-ASS and not using some lame, nonsense term.

My attempt to inject some "kick-ass" humor to make the point obviously failed :-(

They're... nice. First thought - for some reason reminds me of Wrath of the Titans.

Fantastic samples there. I'm really looking forward to seeing this film and hearing the score in full. Looks like a great deal of it made its way onto the album. I'm completely unfamiliar with the work of Ilan Eshkeri, but it sounds like he'll be one to keep an ear out for.

This is my first Eshkeri score, but (so far) I am enjoying it a lot too. I can't be the only one, right? Guys?

Your first Eshkeri?? Aw, man, go and get your hands on Stardust, like right now!! One of the best scores of last decade imho, if you dig fantasy/fairytale stuff.

I like it okay. It's a little long and a little meandering to my ears. My favorite score of his is this year's short but lively Austenland.

I'm with you on both counts, David. My first Eshkeri also, and LOVE this score. Fantastic!

It does meander a bit. But I find his melodies lovely, and the ethnic instruments are used excellently. I should check more into this Eshkeri guy.

Yes TM, I've heard of Stardust and all the praise it gets, but never checked it out... I probably will now!
