Entertainment Weekly is streaming 30 second samples of every track http://insidemovies.ew.com/2013/11/15/the-hobbit-the-desolation-of-smaug-soundtrack/ Well I think the speculation that Conrad Pope orchestrating/conducting instead of Shore would affect the score negatively can be completely squashed, this sounds absolutely Shore through and through. It sounds amazing!! Hard to get too much of a feel for the score from 30 second blips, but there seems to be a variety of good stuff here. Favorite bits so far are the Bilbo material in Barrels out of Bond, and the action adventure opening to The Forest River UPDATE: The samples are now streaming on WaterTower Records' site too, in higher quality (160kbps mp3 vs 96kbps AAC) and with no streaming ads http://www.watertower-music.com/releases_spotlight.php?search=WTM39486

Well I think the speculation that Conrad Pope orchestrating/conducting instead of Shore would affect the score negatively can be completely squashed Of course it can. Conrad Pope is a versatile, experienced orchestrator. Howard Shore himself is not a great orchestrator. Samples sound predictable, but not bad. Better than Hobbit I.

What do you think of the samples, Jason? I love everything I'm hearing! The Forest River sounds like it could be the action track of the year. The quiet moments in Kingsfoil and Beyond The Forest sound lovely. Love the new version of Bilbo's Adventure and Fussy themes in Barrel out of Bond. Love the Laketown theme that opens Thrice Welcome. Love the new expanded versions of Smaug's themes in Liar and a Thief and Smaug. Love the new Descending Thirds stuff in A Spell of Concealment. This is gonna be one hell of an awesome score!

I was so annoyed by 15 to 20 second commercials preceding most of the 30 second clips that I gave up after 9 or 10 of them. But it sounds like each is the beginning of its cue, which is mostly a prelude to the principal theme of the cue, so it's probably unfair to try to assess the music this way. So I'll wait to hear more.

Thanks, Jason, your post slipped right past me! But, frankly, I became a bit impatient with postings beginning with: What do you think of the samples, Schiffy? /and/ What do you think of the samples, Jim? /and/ What do you think of the samples, Jason? /and/ What do you think of the samples, Jim? /and/ What do you think of the samples, Schiffy? which made your own very informative post slip right past me! Thanks!!!
