Entertainment Weekly is streaming 30 second samples of every track

http://insidemovies.ew.com/2013/11/15/the-hobbit-the-desolation-of-smaug-soundtrack/

Well I think the speculation that Conrad Pope orchestrating/conducting instead of Shore would affect the score negatively can be completely squashed, this sounds absolutely Shore through and through. It sounds amazing!!

Hard to get too much of a feel for the score from 30 second blips, but there seems to be a variety of good stuff here.

Favorite bits so far are the Bilbo material in Barrels out of Bond, and the action adventure opening to The Forest River

UPDATE: The samples are now streaming on WaterTower Records' site too, in higher quality (160kbps mp3 vs 96kbps AAC) and with no streaming ads

Of course it can. Conrad Pope is a versatile, experienced orchestrator. Howard Shore himself is not a great orchestrator.

Samples sound predictable, but not bad. Better than Hobbit I.

I think there's also a lot of misunderstanding of how the process works. If Conrad Pope comes back to Howard Shore with orchestration that isn't what Shore wants (and what, to some large extent, he already dictated), Shore isn't going to shrug and say "Oh well." He's going to change it, or have Pope change it, until it's what he expects.

What do you think of the samples, Schiffy?

Shore's sketches are detailed enough to contain the bulk of the instrumental detail in a condensed form. Conrad Pope's role is much the same as it would be on a Williams score - translate the composer short-hand into a full orchestral score.

They're tantalising, but I suspect that EW have only taken the first 30 seconds of each track. Given the length and architecture of the pieces in this score (and the scores that preceded it) I don't think they're representative of the whole thing. Hopefully some meatier samples will appear soon!

Given how Shore builds cues, 30 second samples can never do the score justice. I certainly see no reason to worry from the samples. Any worries I had about the change of orchestrator and orchestra are gone.

Chris.

I'm living temporarily in a relative's house while mine undergoes renovation, and the internet is slow for 1992, much less 2013. So I haven't listened!

It's interesting to note that this is the second time Pope has taken over for the second part of a trilogy. The first Matrix was orchestrated entirely by Don Davis, but Matrix Reloaded utilised Conrad Pope and Erik Lundborg.

I love everything I'm hearing! The Forest River sounds like it could be the action track of the year. The quiet moments in Kingsfoil and Beyond The Forest sound lovely. Love the new version of Bilbo's Adventure and Fussy themes in Barrel out of Bond. Love the Laketown theme that opens Thrice Welcome. Love the new expanded versions of Smaug's themes in Liar and a Thief and Smaug. Love the new Descending Thirds stuff in A Spell of Concealment.

This is gonna be one hell of an awesome score!

I was so annoyed by 15 to 20 second commercials preceding most of the 30 second clips that I gave up after 9 or 10 of them. But it sounds like each is the beginning of its cue, which is mostly a prelude to the principal theme of the cue, so it's probably unfair to try to assess the music this way. So I'll wait to hear more.

Please read my post two posts above yours. The samples on Water-Tower Records' site have no ads.

James Sizemore was also an orchestrator on the score, btw. Not just Mr. Pope. Samples sound terrific!

Thanks, Jason, your post slipped right past me! But, frankly, I became a bit impatient with postings beginning with:

What do you think of the samples, Jim? /and/

which made your own very informative post slip right past me! Thanks!!!

Pope conducted parts of Jurassic Park. I bet you can't tell which bits.

Jeeze, the way people are reacting to this thread, you'd think that Conrad Murray had been brought in to orchestrate and conduct the score instead.
