A few months ago I started picking up some lesser known, maybe obscure scores (obscure to me at least).
Among these little gems are:

Three Wishes-Cynthia Millar
The Straight Story - Angelo Badalamenti
Sister Mary Explains It All - Philippe Sarde
Three Seasons - Richard Horowitz
Wings of the Dove - Edward Shearmur
The Sweet Hereafter - Mychael Danna
Lady Caroline Lamb - Richard Rodney Bennett
A Price Above Rubies - Lesley Barber
Last of the Dogmen - David Arnold
Mansfield Park - Lesley Barber
Stealing Time - Joey Newman
The Ring - Michel LeGrand
Bride of the Wind - Stephen Endelman
Thousand Pieces of Gold - Gary Malkin
Into the Arms of Strangers - Lee Holdridge

Some of composers were known to me - Lee Holdridge, Philippe Sarde, R. R. Bennett, David Arnold, Michel LeGrand, Mychael Danna, Angelo Badalamenti. The others - not too familiar. I picked up many for extremely reasonable prices on eBay, Amazon and in a few out of the way record stores. I am not crazy about all of them but some are amazing. As I listen to them more frequently, they grow on me. I am trying to give some composers unknown to me chance and I don't regret it.

Share your stories of those little gems that you happened upon and wish to recommend. Would love to hear them.

I know we have talked a little about The Last Of the Dogmen, The Sweet Hereafter, and The Straight Story at FSM. They are well-liked scores.

Just to clarify something, Lynch directed The Straight Story, and the music was composed by Angelo Badalamenti. A score of his that isn't really well known but is drop dead gorgeous (great love theme and romantic waltz) is Badalamenti's COUSINS. And the movie is wonderful. I highly recommend this score to anyone who likes melodies.

Thomas Newman's score for THE RAPTURE is a masterpiece, and easily my favorite score by him. It seemingly gets zero attention, though.

Although the fact that the album release is a shuffled up mess doesn't help matters. Fortunately there is a very good, complete and in sequence you-know-what.

I don't think David Shire's THE BIG BUS gets enough love.

Badalamenti's "Straight Story" is one of my favorite scores, and I'm glad you stumbled across it. In most of his scores for David Lynch movies, the dreamy beauty is matched with more severe or darker music, but The Straight Story is straightforward beautiful (I guess it fits the movie, which is a G-rated film about an old man traveling on his riding mower to see his previously-disowned brother before he passes.

Bruce Rowland's THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER is a beautiful, melodic score that deserves more attention than it receives.

So noted. Thanks. It was late and I was literally reading the writing off the cd case.

One of my recommendations would be Bruce Smeaton's "Iceman". And exquisite score that few have heard.

One of most unheralded Elmans is one of his best: EXTREME MEASURES. Its in the Dolores Claiborne style, if you like that.

Glad you went to Youtube. Has a nice love theme and a very wistful "missing you" theme.

I have many scores from the well known composers. But out of this collection one of the scores that stands out is a score to a relatively small movie by a unknown composer. The composer was Joseph James and the movie is “Priest of Love”. The score stands out in my collection for its beauty and originality.

I have the LP issued by Varese Sarabande in 1981 but according to Soundtrackcollector.com it was reissued on CD in 1985 (Screen Archives have the CD). My LP says “The film score of Joseph James” but it turns out “Joseph James” is actually two composers Frances James Brown and Stanley Joseph Seeger. It seems this was the only film score they did together or separately.
