Not sure about my math, but looks like this Deluxe release is: 90 min. (complete score in film) 114 min. (complete score in film + alternates/extras) That just blows me away. The original score release was 48 minutes. Paltry! The original release was a terrific album with all the best highlights but I'm so happy to have the entire score and these very promising extras. This is definitely a must buy for me. The Abyss was one of the very first scores I owned, my first Silvestri; I had the Varese audiocassette back in the day. Thank you Varese for this awesome release!

Varese don't seem to have any samples on their site and just give an account of the movie, nothing about the music.

I bought the original album and have quite enjoyed it, but I'm not sure that I need an expanded release. Are there any highlights I'll be missing if I skip out on this expansion?

This was such a fertile and prolific period for Silvestri: 1985-1995. Of course he's done amazing work outside that window, but I feel like that was his golden age when he composed some of my favorite scores of his, some of my favorite scores period, and The Abyss is smack in the middle of that period that included Predator, Young Guns II, Predator 2, the Back to the Future scores, Bodyguard, Ricochet, Judge Dredd, Forrest Gump...and so many others. One hell of a decade, those ten years, for Silvestri and his film score magic.

It definitely was the period I feel he left his mark and was hot with the hollywood crowd, though he isn't doing too bad nowadays. I listened to the samples of "The Abyss", never owned the score, only saw the extended version of the movie once and can't remember much of it or the score, so I feel I will be going blindly into the abyss but it's good to know you like it as that's usually a sign I will too (an early groundhog prediction)!

If you stare long into Varese Club, Varese Club will also stare into you.

Varese don't seem to have any samples on their site and just give an account of the movie, nothing about the music. They don't expect such huge attention and didn't pay for extra traffic I'm especially frustrated about no samples for this title in particular. The original album is a fantastic presentation of the score, but will the added material hold up?

Actually, there is a bar at the bottom of the page to play samples of some tracks. Sounds great to my ears.

Actually, there is a bar at the bottom of the page to play samples of some tracks. Perhaps for you. I get a Cincopa user traffic warning.
