I have to admit, I seldom get around to the alternates and extras on most expanded editions. I faithfully archive all tracks on computer and back them up, in case I ever get obsessed with a score, but a lot of things go unplayed. This despite the fact that THE OMEGA MAN (first edition) and CARRIE (Kritzerland edition) both have Easter eggs on their final tracks. But today I was checking the final tracks of some extra-long CDs in case there was trouble at the end and they hadn't ripped properly, which is not unheard of. Anyway, I just discovered the "Main Title (Alternate)" at the end of STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT, and it's a sweetheart. I wonder what else I'm missing. So do you plumb the depths of every expanded CD, and if so, have you hit upon any gems?

Yes. At least the first time. Sometimes the "alternate" becomes more of a fave than the "real" track. But not always, surely. MOST of the time you don't have a track and its seven micro-changed alternates all in a row. When I listen to Star Trek: The Motion Picture I'm not listening to all five versions of Ilia's theme all in a row. The RCA Star Wars main title OTOH... Ben Hur might be a bit of a slog.

If I've paid for it, I take the time to listen to the whole thing.
