Annoyingly, I found the ability to paste artwork was removed some years ago - prior to the last upgrade.

I've had iTunes since the early 2000s, but when I bought this fancy new Mac with its 27" screen last June, I couldn't figure out how to paste artwork, which is frustrating, because often Gracenotes gets it wrong or doesn't have it at all. Plus I used to use personal pics for some tunes (including an R-rated nude side shot of me standing next to my bike for one piece!) and can't seem to delete the pics if I want to burn them to a CD-R for someone. And don't get me started on the user UNfriendliness of the new iPhoto!!!

What I usually do is right-click on the album, click "Show Info" and then, under the "Info" tab, drag the (downloaded) image file onto the empty "Artwork" field (or whatever it's called in English; my version is in Danish) and then finally hit OK.

I've tried that. In fact I've tried every variation. It used to work but not now.
