What I find interesting on this board is the lack of discussion on what was one of the major issues years ago on why people bought soundtracks Those beautiful covers on the LP'S. I remember years ago as a vendor how the common remark was You bought soundtracks for 2 reasons THE MUSIC AND THOSE WONDERFUL COVERS. I guess THOR can dig out some thread over the years on this board which covers this issue, but for the most part little is mention of this part of soundtrack collecting. The Cd' covers of the modern age are nothing compared to those great lp covers that embraced many a film soundtrack. In my own apartment I used to have the best ones on my wall.I bought every soundtrack that was available not just to listen and to sell in business but just for those covers. Today I would love to buy every lp soundtrack ever put out and line the walls with them. No, my house is not big enough for that, Any comments on those grand covers.

LP covers HAVE been discussed in this forum, but the posts generally link folks to a website where lots of cover art is on display. Sadly, the "majority" of folks here do not have record players, do not seek out LPs to play and probably haven't been inside a store that has used LPs for sale. One might as well bemoan: "No one here discusses 78 rpm soundtrack covers". Still, I have ALL my soundtrack LPs (mostly in storage) primarily for that reason. One day, I hope to display treasures here and there around my house.

TO RON- I agree with you 100% , there is a reason for everything. What I meant when I said a big issue I was not referring to the board, but back in the 70's 80' 90, when soundtrack collectors talked, be it for years at my vending table or other people tables with soundtracks. Stores like FOOTLIGHTS, common talk with soundtrack buyers etc etc. Many of them did buy the LP's because they just loved the covers. I mean just the feel of the SARABANDE ones were nice. I would often ask my buyers why they are buying the record and if I had a piece of paper like an accountant keeping track I would say about 20 to 25% of the buyers bought it for the covers. What I did as any logical business person would do is put the best covers in front of my table, giving the customers a pleasing sight.

TO DAN BECK- Thanks a lot, just looking at MADMOVYMAN 'S collection gives me a warm feeling of the past, and some eye candy for my senses.

I think years ago I had just about every VARESE SARABANDE soundtrack LP released except for one, which was a hard find[can't think of the title now] When I went westward 7 years ago I sold off my giant record collection , I was however thinking about keeping all of those LP's I didn't . Maybe someday if I find them in good condition I will collect those again. I just loved the feel and texture of those ones. They all looked nice as well.

Ah! Dan the Man strikes a chord. LP covers are works of art. There is nothing that can ever replace the bold, in-your-face imagery that enticed and wooed. Even the "lousy" ones hold a special charm. And tucked inside the delightful sleeves is music! The entire affair is a pleasing, tactile and sensory interaction between owner and album (even the aroma is unique!). I continue to celebrate the wondrous appeal of LP covers (soundtrack covers, natch) on a wall in my office. Thanks for the post, DtM.

Has anybody seen the great releases being put out by Mondo or Waxwork? I LOVE the art.

I definitely remember picking up at flea markets and people's house sales seal LP's with the 44 cent sticker. But I don't think I am old enough to actually remember new LP's going for 44 cents. I think that was a bit before my time. PRE 1970 I presumed.

I mean just the feel of the SARABANDE ones were nice. Those early VARESE sleeves with the huge logo were awesome. The 7th Voyage of Sinbad and One Thousand and One Arabian Nights spring to mind.

It has even been known for people on this board to buy a CD release again simply because they prefer the new cover art!! Guilty as charged! I got Intrada's METEOR and LALA's FANTASTIC VOYAGE for that very reason.
