Would love to hear what he was thinking for the music. Gentle Pig music from Jerry Goldsmith would be nice I would think. Why did he not score it in the end?

Of all the dubious film choices he made, this would have been one of his rasher ones.

What? This is a great film! Would have easily been among the best things Jerry did in the 90s anyway. Nigel Westlake's use of Saint-Saens worked a charm for the film, but I would be super excited to hear what Goldsmith came up with if he actually wrote/recorded anything...

Referring to my own "What Goldsmith scores are left to expand?" thread, apparently none other than Dan Goldwasser has confirmed that at least a substantial amount of Goldsmith's score to this WAS recorded! Now the tapes would just have to be found and Varese can release it! smile Maybe they can put out some other rejected Goldsmith scores that they would control the rights to (because they released the used score by other composers), such as The Public Eye or Wall Street...

Here's an earlier thread on this with Goldwasser's quote, info apparently from Goldsmith himself:

Rasher=bacon=pig, geddit?

You're right about it going over my head -- never heard the term "rasher" before. Then again, I didn't grow up with pork because though I was raised Roman Catholic by my mother, my father was Muslim... smile

The book Torn Music said it was basically a power play between producer & director
that undid the score here - initial direction was darker (producers wishes) , changed to
a lighter touch (director). Light won over dark, our loss! :-\

As much as I like Goldsmith, this would have undoubtedly been one of the sleepy "keyboard lullaby" scores he specialized in by the mid-90's. Nigel Westlake's adroit adaptations of various classical pieces gave the movie a "storybook" quality that Goldsmith probably would not have. I'd certainly be interested in hearing what he did record for the movie, though.

Still, it reminds me of one of the funnier entries in the "Movie Music Glossary" printed in FSM around '96 or so, "BULLSHIT: State Jerry Goldsmith was in when he learned that Babe was up for Best Picture". big grin

Then again, the producers got their way for the sequel and look how well that didn't turn out. frown

Wall Street doesn't exist.

The Kid on the other hand would be an interesting choice and I'd be happy to work with a label who'd be interested in putting it out and offer my "resources". (Since Disney would be involved at some point, the choices are limited).

Yavar, from that thread you linked (and my own quote):
"He also said Goldsmith walked out mere weeks before the recording was to happen and that Jerry wrote 90% of the score AND that they cut a LOT of violent stuff from the film."

There was nothing recorded. There are no tapes to be released. Just 90% of a written score.

(Incidentally, the information came up in conversation with Goldsmith when James Cromwell visited the scoring session for THE SUM OF ALL FEARS. Full circle!)

Wow, if that doesn't "squeal" re-recording by Tadlow, I don't know what does....er...i guess I mean a premiere recording.

Something tells me its the wrong decade of Goldsmith, though I'd like to be proven wrong! wink

You might say, a case of pearls before swine - if you pardon the expression, Yavar...

When I try to imagine Goldsmith's score to this, I'm afraid all I get is a little crackling. big grin

(That'll do - ed.)

How do you imagine his music for this one?
maybe something ala Rudy?

I'm thinking perhaps a gentle lullaby like what he did for RAGGEDY MAN and POLTERGEIST is what Goldsmith might have done for it.

The movie was originally more serious and a lot more violent before cuts were made to make it the film it is now. Goldsmith quit the project when the director shifted sides, apparently.

So more than likely it is a serious score. I demand a new recording!

Was it a slasher flick where Babe takes revenge against humans for our insatiable appetite for bacon? It would be kind of hard to hold a weapon if all you had was hooves, but anything is possible in the movies.
