Since Ennio Morricone was born in 1928, I think it's interesting to see what Morricone fans might list as their top 28 favorites.

Here's mine:

1. Tarantola Dal Ventre Nero, La (Black Belly Of The Tarantula)
2. Lucertola Con La Pelle Di Donna, Una (A Lizard In A Woman's Skin)

7. Poliziotto Della Brigata Criminale, Il (Fear Over The City)

10. Mose' (Moses The Lawgiver)

28. Pugni In Tasca, I (Fists In The Pocket)

Does anybody have 28 favorites?

(if you've done a top 25 or top 30 on Morricone's titles, then most of the work is already done. smile )

Wow, that is quite the undertaking since I am familiar with so many of his works. I'll be a rule-breaker and throw in a top 5 that I am absolutely sure of. Somewhere beyond that five I would throw in Orca, Two Mules for Sister Sara, Exorcist II, Dollars Trilogy, Once Upon a Time in America, Frantic, etc.

1. Days of Heaven
2. Duck, You Sucker
3. Once Upon a Time in the West
4. Cefalonia
5. Gott Mit Uns (The Fifth Day of Peace)

All right, I'm game.

Shockingly, though I know a lot of Morricone's scores, I discovered recently that I don't own as many as I thought I did - something I'm slowly rectifying. Here then, is my "Top 28," though I must stress that, apart from perhaps the first five, the rest should be viewed as being in no particular order, other than the order in which they came to mind - and I'm sure it'd be a different list if I wrote it out tomorrow or yesterday. Looking at this list, I see it might skew more towards the lyrical and thematic, but I do really, really dig his more avant-garde material, too.

1. Giu la Testa (Duck, You Sucker) [Also my favorite Leone film]
2. Il Sorriso del Grande Tentatore (The Devil is a Woman) [I love, love, love this score]
3. Days of Heaven
4. White Dog
5. Cinema Paradiso
6. L'Umanoide (The Humanoid)
7. The Mission
8. The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
9. Once Upon a Time in the West
10. Il Giustiziere (The Human Factor)
11. Frantic
12. Navajo Joe
13. Fatti di Gente Perbene
14. Once Upon a Time in America
15. La Storia Vera Della Signora Dalla Camelie
16. A Time of Destiny
17. The Five-Man Army
18. Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion
19. Guns for San Sebastian
20. Bluebeard
21. Mission to Mars
22. Drammi Gotici
23. Ogro
24. Macchie Solari (Autopsy)
25. Spasmo
26. The Thing
27. Exorcist II: The Heretic
28. The Untouchables (It may not his most inventive score, but I find it incredibly rousing stuff, and I find the low-piano "Strength of the Righteous" stuff constantly playing in my head - much in the same way Jacques Loussier's low-piano writing in "Dark of the Sun" gets stuck in the gaping chasm between my ears.)

That was fun!

Looking back at ToneRow's list, I see I left off "A Quiet Place in the Country," which I think is a really smashing score - some jawdroppingly brilliant material in it. So let's make that my unofficial 29th.

I guess I am not an experienced listener to name that many but my first soundtrack I ever listened to was A Fistfull of Dollars. And that is still my favorite work from him today. I will mention some obvious choices that I enjoy besides The Dollar Trilogy are The Mission, Two Mules for Sister Sarah, Days of Heaven and Once Upon a Time in the West. I know there are plenty more good ones especially in the foreign market that I have to listen to. I heard some samples of Le Proffessionnel and I have that on order now.

My top 25 would be similar to ToneRow's. I would include fewer spaghetti westerns, but then I would also include groovy stuff like "Diabolik," "Metti una Sera a Cena," "The Burglars," and others.

This would be a nearly impossible task for me.

There would be no scores after 1974 or so.

Impossible. I have enough trouble getting my head around my top five, and then I always have to put "this week" to emphasize how tenuous these opinions are. But as a compromise here are my top 28 "that are not listed above".

#2 REVOLVER (1973)
#3 CANONE INVERSO (2000)

Interesting to note how one top 28 can differ from another. Unavoidable I guess with a composer gifted with such style and range.

I could easily name fifty titles, but as most I would be hard pressed to place them in any other order than 'the very best of'.

Agreed. These tunes have a way of imbedding themselves in our synapses.

Edit: off to listen to DARK OF THE SUN (one of my top five favorite FSM releases and for which I'm eternally grateful to Lukas).

Here it is. It is based on the top ~5 best tracks of the soundtracks rather than the listening experience as a whole. As always, I'm surprised by the amount of US movies in other top 10.

10 svegliati e uccidi
11 ...e per tetto un cielo di stelle
12 l'alibi
13 vergogna schifosi
14 la lucertola con la pella di donna
15 come imparai ad amare le donne
16 per qualche dollaro in più
17 il diavolo nel cervello
18 per un pugno di dollari
19 il ritorno di ringo
20 giù la testa
21 sacco e venzetti
22 i malamondo
23 matchless
24 la tarantola dal ventre nero

Here’s my top 28 in alphabetical order other than my top 2 being THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY and THE BIG GUNDOWN (and which is #1 depends on which one I’m listening to at the moment).
And what a surprise, 20 out of 28 are Westerns!

This is based strictly on the listening experience, not how it works as a score. I have many Morricone CDs of films I've never seen...although there are only 5 on this list I've not seen.

1) Il Buono, Il Brutto, Il Cattivo (The Good The Bad And The Ugly)
2) La Resa Dei Conti (The Big Gundown)
3) Allonsanfan
4) C’era Una Volta Il West (Once Upon A Time in The West)
5) Butterfly
6) Da Uomo A Uomo (Death Rides A Horse)
7) Exorcist II: The Heretic
8) Faccia A Faccia (Face to Face)
9) Five Man Army
10) Giu’ La Testa (Duck You Sucker)
11) Guns For San Sebastian
12) The Hills Run Red
13) I Crudeli (The Hellbenders)
14) Il Grande Silencio (The Great Silence)
15) Il Mercenario (A Professional Gun)
16) Il Mio Nome E’ Nessuno (My Name is Nobody)
17) The Mission
18) Navajo Joe
19) Occhio Alla Penna (A Fist Goes West)
20) Orca
21) Per Qualche Dollaro in Piu (For A Few Dollars More)
22) Per Un Pugno Di Dollari (A Fistful of Dollars)
23) Queimada (Burn!)
24) Tepepa
25) Trio Infernal
26) Two Mules for Sister Sara
27) The Untouchables
28) Vamos A Matar Companeros

I never made the exercise of compiling a top list of my favorite composer smile an interesting, but not an easy exercise, and most definitely not resulting in a fixed list, because I will (eagerly) keep working my way through his filmography for years to come.

i would love to be familiar with 28 Morricone scores that I liked, but as it stands I'm intimidated by the number of foreign releases he has, and with going through samples of each to find out which ones would suit me, which is specific enough to be awkward - i love the moodier tracks on Treasure of the Four Crowns, but dislike most fanfare themes and upbeat stuff, I really like L'Humanoide but I always start it at track three, etc etc..
top 3, and these would be in the running for my top ten of any artist of all time - The Thing, Lolita, Frantic - love those albums from start to finish, I'm sure there's a few others out there that belong in that group, but finding them is another matter.

Whilst I think about which titles to include/exclude, I've looked through those titles listed - 236 so far (incl. repeats) / 138 excl. repeats and am amused at some of the choices - as compared with my own choices. e.g. I could not include Queimada - it's just too repetitive for my liking, whilst a distinct favourite, Il Clan dei Siciliani, has only 3 votes to date.

The most popular titles, so far, are: C'era Una Volta Il West with 9 votes, followed by Il Buono, Il Brutto, Il Cattivo and Giu' La Testa, each with 8 votes

As anyone who collects this Maestro's works knows, it's almost impossible to keep up with the releases and although I have a large-ish Morricone collection (340 scores dependent upon how one counts them) I find there are 6 titles mentioned which I don't have. frown Oh well ...

Back to thinking of the 28 titles ...

I'm just glad he wasn't born in 1899 ... smile

Okay, in no particular order, my favourite Ennio Morricone scores are (well: include ... smile):

L'Agnese Va A Morire (And Agnes Chose to Die) 1976
Spogliati, Protesta, Uccidi! (Quando la preda è l'uomo) 1972
Sostiene Pereira (According to Pereira) 1995
La Resa dei Conti (The Big Gundown) 1966
C'Era Una Volta Il West (Once Upon a Time in the West) 1968
Il Clan Dei Siciliani (The Sicilian Clan) 1969
Cosa avete fatto a Solange? (What Have You Done to Solange?) 1972
Disclosure 1994
La Donna Della Domenica (The Sunday Woman) 1975
Le Due Stagioni Della Vita (The Two Seasons of Life) 1975 ... excluding some of the bonus tracks!
e la Donna Creò L'Uomo (Full Hearts and Empty Pockets) 1964
Ecce Homo (I Sopravvissuti) 1969
Senza sapere niente di lei 1969 ... as merged with Lui per Lei 1971
Guns for San Sebastian (La Bataille de San Sebastian) 1968
Tre Colonne in Cronaca 1990 ... possibly my favourite!
Incontro 1971
La Leggenda del Pianista sull'Oceano (The Legend of 1900) 1998

Lucia 2005
Svegliati e Uccidi 1966
Maddalena 1971
Menage all'italiana (Menage Italian Style) 1966
Mosca Addio (Farewell Moscow) 1987
Nanà 1999 - as opposed to the 1983 version!
Nuovo Cinema Paradiso 1998
Tre Donne-Correva L'Anno Di Grazia 1870 1972
La Provinciale 2006

Far more difficult than I thought ... with many others knocking at the door.
