I am watching the film right now and I just realized that it's been 35 years now. It's a brilliant score and I think it deserves a proper (cough*FSM*cough) anniversary treatment along with Kilar's score!

Welcome to the club. ...And the wait. Rumor has it tapes are lost, but rumor also has it a mono version of the full score exists. Oh, those rumors!

Let's just hope those are just rumors and the tapes will be found eventually.

And isn't the FSM label more or less dissolved?

Not even more or less. It's done. But maybe he was saying something else, but it was obscured by his coughing fit.

This would be a project that will fit right into Intrada's working relationship with Universal!

My library got a new printing of Dracula - DVD Still with no color.
I wish MCA would remaster this with the original gorgeous color.

Of course. But I'd better hope the rumors that the tapes're lost is just a rumor. The performance on the original recording is simply magnificent. If they were to re-record the score, I' say performance of such caliber perhaps could only be achieved by using the finest orchestra such as BPO, LSO, BPO etc. or better yet use the studio musicians from LA who are considered one of the best.

Sure thing. no need for a re-recording IF the original tapes survived somewhere and are in decent enough condition to be released, if not then re-recording is obviously the way to go.

It has already been confirmed that the original master tapes are lost:

http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=96480&forumID=1&archive=0

from LLL's facebook:

DRACULA is MIA and has been for quite some time. IF a label is working on it, all that has survived is so-so mono elements as far as I know.

I'd buy the album re-mastered. All those MCA albums have been deleted for so long. I wonder if there's a problem licensing them from UMG?

It's funny, I never really cared for the score when it came out, but revisiting it over the years has made me grow to love it. How cool WOULD it be if Lukas had found stereo masters somewhere and decided to do one more FSM release! big grin....I guess the thread posters' name is apropos.

There is a blu ray release in Japan. Does anyone have this?

This could go the Conan route, where a label rerecords the score and the original masters turn up and are released years later. I love Varese, but their original presentation of the score is very, very sad.

The presentation was MCA's. Varèse merely reissued their LP.

Except the Conan masters were never lost.
