the way we would think at one time the top 3 American Film Composers were
John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith and Elmer Bernstein?
Who would you say were the Top 3 popular / respected Italian film composers were / are?
I'd say Ennio would definitely have to be one.
Please share your Top 3 Italian Film Composers.

I'd surely put Nino Rota, Carlo Savina, Nicola Piovani, Piero Piccioni, Paulo Rustichelli, Stelvio Cipriani, Pino Donaggio, Bruno Nicolai and Mario Nascimbene in the running amongst others.

Personally, he's in my top ten but not top three.
(That would be Ennio, Nino Rota, and Bruno Nicolai).
But world-wide, in terms of popularity, respect, recognition and prestigious assignments I would say yes. It would be Ennio, Nino Rota and Riz Ortolani.
Ennio and Nino are absolutely # 1 & 2, respectively, only A.F. Lavagnino or Nascimbene would give Riz competition for that third slot, I would think.

I think theres probably a difference between status/outside italy recognition and talent.
Equally we are talking fine shades of grey among a multitude of magical maestros who all peaked for several decades at the same time. Which is quite remarkable in itself.
I suspect more traditional collectors will choose Morricone rota lavagnino/ortolani and those who got into morricone through the westerns would choose morricone nicolai and cipriani/ de masi/piccioni/bacalov.

Very hard to limit so many great Italian composers to a top three. Riz is, without any doubt, one of the greats, my favourite of his being "The Yellow Rolls Royce" but purely on an overall listening pleasure basis and, after much consideration, and after my fingernails have been extracted and toenails threatened, I'd go for:
Ennio Morricone, Nicola Piovani, Bruno Nicolai
I'd say not too many on this Board have heard much of Piovani other than his Oscar Winner but youtube is full of his beautiful, haunting and melodic scores as a simple quick search will confirm.
I recall hearing some years ago that some US publication mistakenly printed that Piovani was Morricone in disguise but their music styles are vastly different.
