Filmmaker Ron Howard has Tweeted a tiny musical loop from the scoring stage at Abbey Road, where composer Roque Baños is recording the score for his upcoming whaling story "Heart of the Sea" -- must say, this sounds like a fascinating project, and I am thrilled he has Baños as his composer.

The film is based on the book "In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex" by Nathaniel Philbrick, which apparently recounts historic events that inspired "Moby Dick." The movie is scheduled to open March 2015.

Edit: Or... December 11, 2015.

I'm glad Ron Howard has branched out from using his regular composers. I'm interested to hear what Roque can do with the material.
IN THE HEART OF THE SEA is an amazing story and I recommend it to everyone here.
Unless you're squeamish about cannibalism... and I know you guys aren't.

Hope so!

Do you have recommendations from his non-Hollywood work, Lokutus? I thought his "Evil Dead" score was stunning; I was predisposed to be critical of that whole venture as I was a fan of the original, but I thought what he did with it was thrilling and creative. I admit I am only familiar with a few of his scores -- kicked off by "The Machinist" -- but I know he has quite a body of work I am not familiar with, and others here are much more knowledgeable than I. Henry, are you out there?

That short little taste of Banos' melancholic theme was enough to hook me. Cannot wait for this score and I'm so glad he's getting more work. Solid composer.

I am one of those old farts who is as blasé about new composers as can be.

But one steps up and separates himself from the crowd I can't help take notice.

Desplat was one Roque Baños is another.

No worries, Mike. It does sound good, eh? I've been hearing about this movie for a while, although obviously I missed that previous thread. Since my father retired, he's been working from time to time as a film extra, and he did some work on this film quite a while back. I thought it sounded like a an intriguing story -- especially as Ron Howard seems to have had an affinity for 'water' movies earlier in his career -- and they have a good cast, so I've been rooting for this one since then.

Geez I didn't even hear the first clip. Sounds beautiful. I'm hoping this will be a great film with some Oscar potential.

I'm very happy for Roque! I have the honor to know him personally, and he's an amazing human being.

Can't say I've had the pleasure of meeting him (yet - hopefully someday!), but I too love his work and am so glad he's landed a project that will bring Hollywood recognition. I loved his EVIL DEAD and the thematic portions of OLDBOY and am glad his third true venture into US filmmaking is one that indeed holds some Oscar potential.

How weird that it took Hollywood close to 20 years to recognize him (despite a pretty massive body of work that accumulated quickly) while some other European composers get "nabbed" very early in their careers.

Not only meeting him, but I have the honor to have worked with Roque, one of the greatest moments of my life!

I served as his translator and assistant on the recording sessions of his score "La Daga de Rasputin".
As I said, one of the greatest and most pleasant moments of my life.

BTW, this score is amazing, with big orchestra and choir, and it is a real pitty it was not released on CD.
The recording was made with the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra, and Roque conducting.

Wow, that's awesome!

Given that most everything he's written has seen some sort of release, I'm surprised to hear about this nugget slipping through the cracks. Perhaps Quartet or the like will rescue it from obscurity? It appears to have barely been released at all anywhere - almost no info online for it anywhere. It was directed by an actor who has appeared in a few Banos-scored films (Common Wealth, a few Torrente films).

Any idea why the film appears to have been kept in a vacuum? Did the production company fold while in post or something? Couldn't even find any reviews online anywhere. There are apparently a few sound clips on his website, but they won't seem to load for me (whereas others on his site load fine):
