I know it's been said many times but, having just watched these films again on TV recently, it has made me yearn anew for complete scores to these films. Listening to the many cues in the films emphasizes just how inadequate the three cd's that were released really are.

The interplay of themes and motifs in various scenes is superb. I am sure that complete scores on double cd's would sell well.

Amen!!

I'd definitely buy expanded versions of these scores.

I'm sure that's somewhere on Disney's priority list, for all we know they're already working on them!

I wouldn't be surprised if Intrada are already all over this....trying to strike a deal somehow....it would be a huge seller for them I think...

They did release an expanded limited Phantom Menace soundtrack:

This felt almost like an isolated score version though, or am I mistaken in thinking that?
I'd prefer something akin to the double disc albums released for the original trilogy. Are they considered concert suites? I'm not sure what the correct term is, but the way the cues were grouped together in longer form made it a more enjoyable listening experience than the clipped edited version of this Phantom Menace pressing.

By the prequels the music just got to Mickey Mousy for my tastes. Sith had a dramatic edge which was more in tune with the original trilogy.

These definitely need proper expanded releases. After doing my own expanded edits and a true intended version for TPM they would be great for legit releases, especially AOTC.

Regarding the "Ultimate Edition" for TPM it is good to have a lot of previously unreleased music in great quality but ya was more of an isolated score edited for a better listening experience. It fell really short...

If complete releases happened I'd buy theme in a heart beat. I wish that LLL or Intrada would get the chance to release them...

The problem with the new trilogy, TPM in particular, is that they were edited and chopped up in such a manner that a lot of editing of the score had to be re-done. I'm honestly not really sure how you would do a proper release unless you released it as originally composed by Williams...

If I remember correctly from that time period, I thought part of the reason there was no II/III 'ultimate/expanded/etc' score was how crazy people reacted to the Episode I expanded release - and by that I mean extremely negative.

I thought I read somewhere the word from the inside was that people complained and made such a fuss about it, the studio figured it was not worth it for Episode II/III.

Correct me if I'm wrong... It's certainly plausible to me at least. We've seen how our community reacts when certain releases have been called 'complete' and a score is missing 30 seconds of material and it's a travesty against mankind. razz

I never really understood the 'hate' the expanded Episode I got. Was it perfect - no. But I was still relatively satisfied with it and the additional music it gave us

It got hate because it was falsely advertised as having "every note of the original music that John Williams composed for Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace." No doubt it still would have gotten backlash since it was presented in an edited form, but probably not as much since people weren't expecting to hear a score with loops and harsh edits.

At this point, I'd settle for I Am Shark to release Clones and Sith on LP. What's the hold up there?

The Phantom Menace ultimate edition is, for my money, a better all-around listen that the OST (and I think the sound quality is a slight upgrade too), but the trouble was it wasn't made my score lovers....you can say what you want about a tiny fault in some release by LLL, Kritz, Intrada etc, but any of them would do better than the Ultimate Edition...but Intrada are my big hopes for these scores (as well as the future ones - including the spins-off) with their deal with Disney.....I'm sure, if it is not forthcoming, then Intrada are doing their damn best to make it happen....and I wish them luck with it....it will not be, for me, a case of "Ordered", it would be a case of "stop typing and have my money right this very second please".

This is absolutely what I'd be looking for in terms of an expanded release: scores as intended by Williams. Unfortunately, it would be tricky to do this with out explicitly calling attention to the fact that the scores were heavily butchered in the editorial process... would Disney approve of that?

Another option might be to do something like the Arista box set or the recent Indy box set where you have three disks as programs for the main scores and a fourth disk of extra material. Honestly, unlike the original trilogy, I'm not convinced that the prequel scores would necessarily play that well in complete chronological presentations. There's definitely good material to be added to the existing releases, but I honestly wouldn't add more than say 20 minutes per score to get an optimal presentation.

I figure that if we don't see re-releases of the prequel scores sometime in the next year, then it probably won't happen until after the end of the new cycle of movies. I think to an extent, it depends on how much Disney wants to promote prequel-era material in the run up to Episode VII. So far, they've wisely tended to focus on original trilogy-era material.

Not to start a flame war or anything, but this is why I prefer C&C. Who is to decide what those best 20 minutes are? You're favorite cues may not necessarily be what mine are. C&C covers all bases. John Williams didn't see fit to include "Carbon Freeze" on the Empire OST nor the climactic final lightsaber dual on Jedi, yet those are two of my favorite cues from the entire SW saga. Same with the helicopter recuse on the Superman OST.

Those who prefer album presentations will say only a "trained producer" or the composer him or herself should be allowed to pick the music released.

I don't agree with that, but that's what they'd say.

Fair point... C&C is probably the way to please the majority of film score fans. But the problem remains: how do you define complete and chronological for the prequels? The Ultimate Edition of the Phantom Menace is one interpretation (albeit by a record company less familiar with our community) of what that means.

It might even be challenging to define complete and chronological in the context of what Williams intended for the films. If I recall correctly, Phantom Menace's ending was heavily altered editorially from its original version, so there might be multiple versions of what Williams though the score should be, even before it was hacked apart.

Chris.

It shouldn't be too difficult. Present the cues as recorded. Which is what's usually done in C&C releases. Unless I'm missing something.
