As much as I love Shore's Lord Of The Rings score, I must admit that I was equally as excited when I initially read that Kilar might have gotten that gig! What a great piece of music he might have composed...

kilar vs. shore??? that's like rolex vs. swatch...

BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA and Williams' JFK are hands-down the best scores of the 90s. If you haven't heard them yet (how that could be I don't know) you REALLY missed something. (BTW: the respective movies are TOP NOTCH as well...)

(hell, I even like the Annie Lennox song!!)

I bought a used copy of DRACULA on a whim (and since it was only seven bucks), but I didn't care for it much outside of a few moments. Perhaps it works better in the film.

I thought Kilar's score for THE NINTH GATE worked well in the movie (despite that annoying horn motif), but could tell it was not something I could listen to by itself.

I hear if you play the CD backwards, you can hear the Beatles.

Dracula needs to be heard in the film to be appreciated.

the choral stuff in The Ninth Gate is just cool, man. love that dark, gothic sound.

(and if you haven't tried it yet, anyone here should check out Portrait of a Lady).

Like I said, THE NINTH GATE sounded really godo in the film, but I could it wouldn't be a score I could listen to over and over on its own. And I loved the movie, too, though the final three minutes or so were absolutely atrocious.

Everyone should check out his classical album too which amongst others includes his fabulous piece 'Exodus', it's on the NAXOS label so it's cheap...no excuses!wink

You are right in that the album is quite intense on its own, mainly because Kilar operates in a quasi-minimalistic idiom with plenty of "chord-stop" effects. But I think the main title theme is absolutely gorgeous...with that wordless female vocal and all.

I've always loved the music in this trailer. Am I wrong?

Also, what is it?

LOVE kilar's BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA. It managed to located this distant, unused method of scoring horror and use it to full effect. I can't think of another romantic horror score quite like kilar's BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA. The opening cue unnerves me like no other. The "Hunt Builds" cue is relentless and driving in its intensity, slowly building to a climax overflowing with emotion and power.

kilar's THE NINTH GATE was pretty good. Somewhat in the shadow of DRACULA (kilar scoring pure evil), it paled, but it certainly had some wonderful moments like "Vocalise" and "Opening Titles." kilar was born to write music for the cello.

PORTRAIT OF A LADY contained an abundance of the romantic leanings from DRACULA, although somewhat tamer. Still worth a listen or ten.

Other than that not heard much from Kilar. I think I tried his PAN TADEUSZ one time on (GUSHING) recommendation from Jonathon Broxton, but I didn't find it to be as rapturous as he found it to be.

Not sure if it's still in print but the Milan release from 1993, Wojciech Kilar: A Collection of His Work
contains much of it.

Kilar's Dracula is good but I definitely perfer The Ninth Gate. Theres something to be said about the creepy, sexually obsessive music from the later. The theme from it is completely Herrmannesque!

The real evil of Kilar's DRACULA is how many times it's been used as a temp track in other scores or film trailers.

Are you saying the trailer music in that YouTube clip appears on the $600, out-of-print Milan release?

Only £27.50 here. That $600 one is just some Amazon vulture, there are always a few out there. I can't imagine any CD being worth that much.
