***************************

One of the few composers we rarely talk about... better than doing several threads for his individual scores that gets no attention, perhaps it will be easier to just have one thread with news related to this highly underrated composer.... So far he doesn't have that many CDs availble besides OMBLINE, SPLICE, A ROYAL AFFAIR (co-composed by Gabriel Yared), L'AGE DE RAISON, HELL and his recent elegant thriller score for UN HOMME IDEAL

It seems he has another album coming out soon, which will be again released by Cristal Records - LA GLACE ET LE CIEL - which is already available to pre-order at Music box with planned release date on October 16th.

I'm on the fence. I thought SPLICE had a great main title - Love that sweeping string interlude, reminds me of the great lyrical genre film scores of the 70's and 80's - but nothing of interest thereafter. None of the other scores I've heard form him thus far have been of interest. It's all plainly generic sounding to me. Philippe Rombi or Frederic Talgorn he's isn't... Though that does not, of course, mean there isn't great music lurking in that noggin of his - Just hasn't had a project that allowed for it really I'd guess.

ok... the question is why exactly he should do anything like Rombi or Talgorn? Not to mention that Talgorn's ANTHONY ZIMMER is actually pretty close to Aufort's style (at least in case of his recent Um Homme Idéal), which is far more minimalistic - do you have the same problem with for example Morricone that he doesn't sound like Goldsmith? Kind of doubt that.

Many thanks to Mikael for releasing this one!

http://moviescoremedia.com/past-life-cyrille-aufort/

Coinciding with the film’s US premiere, MovieScore Media presents Cyrille Aufort’s score for Past Life, a thrilling investigation into the sins of the past. Written and directed by Avi Nesher, Past Life tracks the daring late 1970s odyssey of two sisters – an introverted classical musician and a rambunctious journalist as they unravel a shocking wartime mystery that has cast a dark shadow on their entire lives. Since one of the main characters is also a musician, the score for Past Life includes not only traditional underscore, but also original, deliberately challenging pieces that were commissioned especially for the film, to be performed by the in dramatic moments.

As composer Cyrille Aufort recalls: “When Avi and I talked about Past Life, he told me it was a quest for truth of two sisters haunted by a dark secret. That’s why he the score to play with different moods so I started composing with the idea of going from dramatic, romantic and emotional themes to some kind of action music in the archives scene. The main title was composed with the character of Sefi in mind. On the one hand I wanted it to have a lyrical touch and on the other I wanted to add something else, some kind of dark quality to it. That’s what Past Life’s score is, a blend of several musical components that mirrors the feelings of the characters. I really want to thank Joy Rieger for lending her voice to this music.”

In addition to Aufort’s score, the album features new recordings of choral music performed by The Thlema Yellin Alumni Choir conducted by Yishai Shtekler and two original compositions by contemporary composers Ella Milch-Sheriff and Avner Dorman. As Avi Nesher explains: “Ella has a unique life story which served as basis for the plot of “Past Life”. It was very important for me to have her write the musical piece with which Sephi – Ella’s cinematic “twin” – struggles throughout the film until the piece is performed in full at the end. Avner Dorman wrote the brilliant score of my previous film The Wonders and being a very inventive and clever modern composer, I thought he would write a quirky yet powerful piece for the German composer who guides Sefi on her both physical and metaphorical journey.”

French composer Cyrille Aufort started composing music for the theater, short films and animation films before working extensively in the cinema. While working as an orchestrator for Alexandre Desplat, Aufort’s first major composing credit was Vincenzo Natali’s DNA-based sci-fi horror Splice, starring Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley. In 2012, Aufort and Gabriel Yared co-composed the score for A Royal Affair, the historical drama starring Alicia Vikander and Mads Mikkelsen was released by MovieScore Media. His more recent credits include Yann Gozlan’s A Perfect Man as well as the new Arctic-themed documentaries of March of the Emperors‘ Luc Jacquet: The Ice and the Sky and L’Empereur.

and just released!
CD coming soon from Quartet!

http://moviescoremedia.com/knock-cyrille-aufort/

MovieScore Media and Quartet Records join forces in a groundbreaking collaboration by releasing Cyrille Aufort’s energetic score for Lorraine Lévy’s comedy starring Omar Sy in the title role. Knock is a classic French play which already had several adaptations on the screen as well. It tells the story of Doctor Knock (Sy) who arrives to a town whose patients are too healthy. By using his charming personality and cunning deceit, the good doctor convinces everybody about having some sort of great illness. But when he meets the beautiful Adéle (Ana Girardot), his plan may very well fall through…

French composer Cyrille Aufort’s score is anchored by a strong network of themes, driven by Knock’s own propulsive theme, full of plans and hopes. While this theme is one for departure and motion, the theme for Adèle lends a feminine charm to the narrative. It perfectly compliments Knock’s restless personality with a childlike wonder recalling the sound of a magical music box. In order to bring two such wildly different characters together, Aufort proposes a third musical element, something a little more romantic to characterize the mutual attraction between the two protagonists (“Adèle and Knock”, “Farewell to Adèle”). The odious Lansky (a character who knows the truth about Knock) has his own espionage-flavoured melody.

Cyrille Aufort started composing music for the theatre, short films and animation films before working extensively in the cinema. While working as an orchestrator for Alexandre Desplat, Aufort’s first major composing credit was Vincenzo Natali’s DNA-based sci-fi horror Splice, starring Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley. In 2012, Aufort and Gabriel Yared co-composed the score for A Royal Affair, the historical drama starring Alicia Vikander and Mads Mikkelsen. His more recent credits include Yann Gozlan’s A Perfect Man, Avi Nesher’s Past Life as well as the new Arctic-themed documentaries of March of the Emperors’ Luc Jacquet: The Ice and the Sky and L’Empereur.

The release of Knock marks a shift in MovieScore Media’s distribution strategy. Going forward, MovieScore Media will focus on album production and digital distribution, sub-licensing rights for physical releases to other labels who specialize in the CD and/or the vinyl market. Knock is the first such release: while digital copies will be available through MovieScore Media, the physical copies will be produced by the esteemed Spanish film music specialty label, Quartet Records.

Cyrille Aufort is amazing. I just "discovered" him last year when I bought my first CD of his score for "Past Life" and "KNOCK" both blew me away and it was on. OMBILINE is absolutely gorgeous and a recent pick up. I still need Homme Ideal, Le Glace and would kill for L'Empereur. Anyone have a copy they would like to sell?

La Glace et le Ciel is one of his best... the CD is not that difficult to find from Amazon fr or Music box.
L'Empereur (same director as La Glace...) and L'Empire du Milieu du Sud are also fantastic but download only...
Check out the samples on my website smile

Hopefully we'll get to his his score for the new Nepal documentary... that one should be something special.
