Hello, I'm new to this Message Board,but this topic prompted me to make my first small contribution...
I've already put my order in for this CD. I never thought of this work as especially 'large scale' but it was quite melodic nonetheless. To be honest,whatever the credits say I have always tended to think Richard Harvey has considerable input to the music,certainly more than he was credited with.
Anyway I look forward to the CD. I'd love to see a few more tv scores from the USA and here in the UK. For example:
MAN FROM ATLANTIS - Fred Karlin
THE PROTECTORS - John Cameron
THE PROFESSIONALS - Laurie Johnson.
(And speaking of the last title, are you the same Stephen Lister.....????)

I know there are a few people here who would agree with you about a MAN FROM ATLANTIS CD. I've always liked Fred Karlin's music; the release of his Stalking Moon recently was a cause for celebration ... maybe the guys behind that CD might one day turn their attention to The Man From Atlantis...
I like John Cameron too - didn't he also compose scores for THE PERSUADERS? I love his mischievous music for the Peter Cook movie THE RISE AND RISE OF MICHAEL RIMMER.
Laurie Johnson deserves more releases. I'd like to see THE PROFESSIONALS on CD too. His scoring of that show was memorable - his fun & funky style from New Avengers blended with more serious overtones. And as for your last question about me: yes, guilty!

No, THE PERSUADERS was scored by Ken Thorne with a bit done by big band composer/arranger David Lindup. As far as MAN FROM ATLANTIS is concerned,it was a way above average score for a way below average series. I suppose in a way that could describe Myers score for THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES which was disappointing in many ways(though that doesn't stop me wanting the series on DVD..I only have the truncated videotape version)
Agree with the comments on Johnson's scores for THE NEW AVENGERS and THE PROFESSIONALS. I really do hope they see a release one day but I get the impression he isn't really that bothered,which is a shame. Even if they released a CD of the Unicorn Kanchana MUSIC FROM THE AVENGERS,THE NEW AVENGERS,and THE PROFESSIONALS it would be something! Smashing funky music played by real musicians...you don't see that any more.
Lastly Stephen....yo da man! THE PURGING OF CI5 and KICKBACK were two of my favourite episodes!

Ah I see. I can't find my video copy at the moment but I'm sure the credits pretty much say the above.

Thanks for the kind words, Simon I remember writing Kickback's fake assassination sequence to Morricone's Violent City score. It was fascinating to later hear what Laurie did with it, a big upbeat number. Ian Sharp, the director, wanted it to play without any music, just the natural sounds of the park, and disliked the "big samba thing" that Laurie put in (!)
I thought the casting of Norman Eshley was off-the-wall, but worked well. Seeing the bespectacled neighbour from George & Mildred play a tough guy was really refreshing. Although, I have to say, their first choice of Ian McShane would have been VERY cool...
I believe Laurie has tapes of all his stuff. If he can ever be persuaded, there would be volumes and volumes he could release. I'd buy 'em. I'm grateful for the three volumes of The Prisoner - some nice Albert Elms stuff in there - but justice will really be done the day we have, say, a couple of discs of original scores from The Professionals and Avengers/New Avengers. Oh, and throw in most of the work of Edwin Astley while we're at it ... The Saint ... Randall & Hopkirk ... etc ... etc ... how many CDs could you fill with all of THAT wonderful music?

Great to see Stephen and Sir T add their usual informative and entertaining comments about an overlooked composer who needs to be discussed in the modern American film music canon.

GEEZ--Cameron's THE PROTECTORS--haven't thought about that since it last aired in 1973! The theme song was so over the top it moved into the "so bad it's good" categorie.
"In the avenues and alleyways, where the SO-O-OUL
of man is easy to BUY . . . ."
They CERTAINLY don't write 'em like that any more.

Yeah well we all have different tastes:-) Don't forget the theme was actually written by songwriters Mitch Murray and Peter Callendar,not John Cameron. I am talking about the jazzy music score which Cameron composed,very much of its times.

Well, I recently watched The Martian Chronicles complete mini series on DVD (loved it on its original airing) but for some reason I never bought the CD on the Airstrip One label back in 2002.
So I was surprised to find Buysoundtrax still had copies! Placed an order, which arrived with me this week - very quick service as I always get from them!
I remember I used to get excited when a new CD I'd ordered came or I saw one in a shop. Well, I actually got the old feeling again when Chronicles arrived - haven't had it for years.
Now, when I watched the DVD, when the ethnic flute theme came on, my kitten, sitting on the bed, pricked up his ears and sat up intently, listening.
I tested that with the CD today - stuck on the Martian theme and lo and behold, he stopped in his tracks, listened, then went over to the CD player and sat right in front of the speaker! Guess I have a Stanley Myers-loving feline!

This score had been one of my grails, never thought it would see the light of day. I remember this TV series from the original airing and always remembered the music.
Very interesting score and a well produced CD. Love the notes by Hans Zimmer about his mentor Stanley Myers.

Well, based on positive comments here and elsewhere, I bought it, and, for me, it was a very long headache. Was looking for something to carry my "Kismet" Blu-ray order over the $35 mark to wipe out shipping and made a lousy choice. Too bad. Let me know if anyone is still looking for it. I'll pay the postage.
