News just broke that Jean 'Toots' Thielemans has passed away.

In Dutch: http://nos.nl/artikel/2127549-toots-thielemans-94-overleden.html

The most talented harmonica-player who ever lived. If there's a soundtrack with harmonica in your collection, chances are Toots played it. If not: get on to that!

For now, my thoughts are with his family, friends and admirers.

Sorry to hear that. He was probably the greatest harmonica player in the world, next to Tommy Morgan and our own Sigmund Groven. But 94 is damn good innings!

I'll mostly remember him for his collaborations with John Williams on THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS and CINDERELLA LIBERTY.

Our national pride !!
RIP Jean

Was sitting next to him in 1992 at a Pat Metheny concert in Brussels.
They had just collaborated on Metheny's 'Secret Story' album.
Was very friendly and charming

He played this wonderful theme for a tv-series I edited a long time ago...

Whenever the Baantjer-theme comes up in a conversation, it happens more often than not that people think it was Thielemans who composed the theme, not Jurre Haanstra. Understandable, Toots fingerprints are all over it.

He *did* compose a film score once, though: The ridiculous adventures of mister Sherlock Jones. Only rel asked on lp at the times, needless to say a re-release on a more modern medium is well deserved. You can listen to the main theme here.

Indeed he did not compose it. Jurre did.

It's like when people say John Williams (the guitarist) composed THE DEER HUNTER theme....

Very sad to hear this, a great innings but a sad loss.

One of my all time favourite tracks, sublime and beautiful...

And of course...

Sad news, at some stage today I'll give 'Midnight Cowboy' and 'Jean de Florette' a listen.

I've always preferred Thielemans' performance to Tommy Morgan's on Barry's later recordings and concerts. The edgier performance fits the film and the theme perfectly.

Speaking of Toots' edge: I loved his contributions to Young's Hard Rain. Tough, raw but very melodic. Great theme, but Toots augmented it with his performance.

Worth remembering that Toots played on the score as heard in the movie of Midnight Cowboy but Tommy Reilly played on the album version.

Very sad to see him go but a long life and a wonderful career.

May he Rest In Peace.

That's right, I'd forgotten that. I hope one day we get the film score version.

Indeed. In the meantime we've got Toots with the Boston Pops, John Williams conducting.

EDIT: Couldn't get the damned video to work, but Timmer could. It's the second post below this.

I remember him most for his great collaboration with James Newton Howard on Intersection.

And of course the achingly beautiful Always And Forever, which Pat Metheny dedicated to his (Pat's) parents.

According to imdb Toots did some film composing too.

RIP Mr. Thielemans.

Thanks Timmer!

Edited the video link a couple of times, but I couldn't get the damn thing to works. Fortunately, you could smile

Added to this post not to flood the thread: Dutch leading news website *also* thinks Thielemans composed Baantjer... :-/
