You sound like Thor! :-) Thor is one of my idols on this board. As long as you don't say I sound like Ford I'm happy, but with THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR, the score combines so many styles -- from jazz, electronic, to symphonic, it's (in the composer's own words, "one of my finest, and would love to see it out on cd." Unfortunately, it is too late for that, but maybe some wise cd producer will get around to it.

But back to THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR. As James says, it's an absolutely amazing amalgam of jazz, electronics and symphonic crossover - if any of you haven't heard this, it's kind of like a cross-eyed version of Denny Zeitlin's INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS mixed with Ron Grainer's THE OMEGA MAN. But that description doesn't do it justice either - it's very much its own thing, completely Gil Mellé. I'm sure many of you nutters out there would snap this up if it came out. James, you say that Gil was proud of this score - let's hope something can be done to make a tribute to a great composer and a great man (by the way, are you looking at the MovieMusic message board? Melchior, I haven't heard BONE. The only memories I have of that film (which I didn't see) are from Cinema X magazine (1974) which showed pictures of the naughty bits. I was young, so I remember those tits (though I don't remember whose they were). Yes, THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR is completely 5-star music. Other 5-star Mellés (in my humble opinion) are- THE SENTINEL - Surely some of the greatest, unknown/underrated music in soundtrack history. A massive score, and absolutely compellingly original. Awe-inspiring. FRANKENSTEIN: THE TRUE STORY - Magnificent, awesome, tremendous. This is THE best of TV scoring, in fact it's the best of ANY scoring. I could go on. THE ORGANIZATION is just great (what a rip-roaring sax in those Main Titles), then those TV Movies like THE PRESIDENT'S PLANE IS MISSING... but I'm forgetting myself. This isn't the Gil Mellé thread, but rather the ULTIMATE WARRIOR thread - and that score is absolutely fantastic. Lukas Kendall- hear us!

BONE was director Larry Cohen's first film which Gil scored. Melle was supposed to have scored Cohen's second film Q: THE WINGED SERPENT, but was late getting to the office to sign the contract due to traffic (!!) and the assignment went to Frank Cordell. Imagine what Gil would have done with Cohen's GOD TOLD ME TO... a very unusual, offbeat, the alien-are-us type of SF film. Graham, I read your comments, and there are things that I will not post, but keep them for the big one. Oh, I almost forgot; all three films can be found in a boxed DVD set with commentaries on each titled THE LARRY COHEN COLLECTION.

But The Winged Serpent wasn´t Cohen´s second movie and it was scored by Robert O. Ragland. I was just about to correct myself when I read your post. Thanks again. Either way, Ragland's score was extremely derivative of Bernard Herrmann. Frank Cordell scored GOD TOLD ME TO.

I will also be staying in Malibu for a couple of days and the other nights at the Sheraton at Universal Studios, the hotel where Gil Melle stayed at when he worked on THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN, all on Universal, of course!

Give my respect to Denise! Instead of keeping your knowledge like a highly guarded safe, you should move on and convince Denise to act before it's too late... There's a niche for that music from the jazz milieu to the soundtrack experts and the electronic underworld.
