Just a heads-up that Paramount is releasing a beautiful DVD of THE REIVERS this week. The movie looks absolutely breathtaking (in widescreen for the first time on video) and sounds superb (5.1, 2.0 stereo) as well. No extras but for under $15 it's a bargain -- and a great film (and score!) as well.
Also out this week is a weird -- and wild -- Michael Ritchie flick from 1972, PRIME CUT, with Lee Marvin, Gene Hackman and Sissy Spacek. I had never seen the movie before but I was enthralled by it -- another great looking DVD (in scope) with a terrific Lalo Schifrin score.
Finally there's LIFEGUARD, the Sam Elliott cult classic from '76. Not only is it in widescreen but also has Paul Williams' "Time and Tide" song restored to the beginning and end credits...which is a bit bittersweet since Dale Menten's instrumental cue (from the video and TV versions) is now gone, and I'm not sure it didn't fit the movie better. (I fully realize I may be the only one who enjoys this film, but c'mon, Kathleen Quinlan looked damn good back in those days, and the movie is kinda fun as well).
Anyhow, my reviews will be up Tuesday (they're over at andyfilm.com right now), but I thought I'd put the word out: all three look terrific and I know there are some REIVERS fans out there will be happy to see the movie in widescreen at last (and for me, for the first time too!).

I ordered my copy weeks ago. My favorite John Williams score... a beautiful film (though a tad sexist unfortunately).

Finally there's LIFEGUARD, the Sam Elliott cult classic from '76.
I remember telling Ron Koslow how much I enjoyed this film and what it had to say... that was before he was going all weird with his CBS Beauty & The Beast fiasco.

They also just released Target, Arthur Penn's film with Gene Hackman and Matt Dillon, score by Michael Small. Not very good, but the score has some of the usual Small terrific cues.

One of my remaining major Grail scores. Love the collision of light easy listening and hard-driving Schifrin action (the cue gearing up to the final confrontation). Would dearly love to have the complete score on disc.

PRIME CUT is my biggest holy grail at the moment. I love the movie (which has been released on a very nice Blu Ray out of Germany recently) and would kill to get this score - especially for the cue near the beginning where Marvin and his crew leave Chicago to take on Hackman. It's a surreal, muscular piece of film scoring.
Great to see the enthusiasm. I just picked up the aforementioned Blu-ray--the company, Explosive Media, is actually Swiss--which reminded me of how superb Lalo's score is. The easy listening mixed with action, as mentioned above, is always an attractive combination for me. The "Chicago to KC" cue--and the whole scene for that matter--is maybe my favorite in the film.
