Just a heads-up that Paramount is releasing a beautiful DVD of THE REIVERS this week. The movie looks absolutely breathtaking (in widescreen for the first time on video) and sounds superb (5.1, 2.0 stereo) as well. No extras but for under $15 it's a bargain -- and a great film (and score!) as well.

Also out this week is a weird -- and wild -- Michael Ritchie flick from 1972, PRIME CUT, with Lee Marvin, Gene Hackman and Sissy Spacek. I had never seen the movie before but I was enthralled by it -- another great looking DVD (in scope) with a terrific Lalo Schifrin score.

Finally there's LIFEGUARD, the Sam Elliott cult classic from '76. Not only is it in widescreen but also has Paul Williams' "Time and Tide" song restored to the beginning and end credits...which is a bit bittersweet since Dale Menten's instrumental cue (from the video and TV versions) is now gone, and I'm not sure it didn't fit the movie better. (I fully realize I may be the only one who enjoys this film, but c'mon, Kathleen Quinlan looked damn good back in those days, and the movie is kinda fun as well).

Anyhow, my reviews will be up Tuesday (they're over at andyfilm.com right now), but I thought I'd put the word out: all three look terrific and I know there are some REIVERS fans out there will be happy to see the movie in widescreen at last (and for me, for the first time too!).

I ordered my copy weeks ago. My favorite John Williams score... a beautiful film (though a tad sexist unfortunately).

I remember telling Ron Koslow how much I enjoyed this film and what it had to say... that was before he was going all weird with his CBS Beauty & The Beast fiasco.

You're not the only one, Andy. Lifeguard is a pretty decent film, haven't seen it years ! Great news.

Just ordered my REIVERS from deepdiscountdvd.com for $9.36 w/free shipping. They also have LIFEGUARD for the same price.

Had the old Vhs of THE REIVERS which sound wasn't the best. Look forward to the DVD quality pic and audio.

I've been reading about Prime Cut for a long time now, and I'm really happy it's now available. This baby is most definitely on my "to buy" list.

The Reivers is a remix for stereo (5.1) - the original film was mono.

JC, are you sure? I only ask because even the CBS/Fox VHS tape was in stereo. Most of the time Paramount will include the original mono track as an option, but even the 2.0 DD track is stereo.

Greg, I'd be surprised if you didn't enjoy it. Really good stuff, economically told, superb widescreen cinematography, and a kickin' Schifrin score. Well worth it!

They also just released Target, Arthur Penn's film with Gene Hackman and Matt Dillon, score by Michael Small. Not very good, but the score has some of the usual Small terrific cues.

Those of you who haven't seen PRIME CUT yet, get ready -- not only do you have great performances by Marvin and Hackman, and a great Schifrin score; you also get a wild script (listen very closely to the wordplay and also witness a tribute to Hitchcock's NXNW) and Sissy Spacek and other young lovelies displaying their wares.

Ritchie wouldn't do anything this weird again until 1980's THE ISLAND - and even that ain't as good as PRIME CUT.

After seeing this, you'll never think of Kansas in quite the same way ever again... forget all that WIZARD OF OZ crap.

Unfortunately? It's an accurate depiction of "its time". Whether it was right or wrong is not an issue.

Are you advocating revisionism for such fare?

Andy Dursin, am quite sure that Reivers was mono.
Fox on vhs (and some laser titles) did some fake streo on several titles where they left the dialogue track and effects tracks in mono and did artificial mono spread on themusic tracks for stereo - they did this for The Omen on Laser, Hawaii on vhs (short version of the film), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and quite a few others. these are all the earlier lasers and vhs, not the later dvd versions.
But compare the fox vhs of the Reiversto the new dvd and they should sound drastically different.

Great Williams score, but my favorite is still
The Fury.

I worked at the theater in San Diego where "The Reivers" played its first engagement. It was in very impressive full stereophonic sound.

Big fan of LIFEGUARD and PRIME CUT. Yet to see THE REIVERS...need to do that.

I'm surprised there's no mention anywhere of Lalo Schifrin's score to PRIME CUT here. This is a CBS property. If there's enough score, it would be great to hear it outside of the film on disc.

One of my remaining major Grail scores. Love the collision of light easy listening and hard-driving Schifrin action (the cue gearing up to the final confrontation). Would dearly love to have the complete score on disc.

PRIME CUT is my biggest holy grail at the moment. I love the movie (which has been released on a very nice Blu Ray out of Germany recently) and would kill to get this score - especially for the cue near the beginning where Marvin and his crew leave Chicago to take on Hackman. It's a surreal, muscular piece of film scoring.

Heh. Saw this post from 2005. I did eventually get the Prime Cut DVD, and enjoyed the heck out of it...earlier this year. smile

Great to see the enthusiasm. I just picked up the aforementioned Blu-ray--the company, Explosive Media, is actually Swiss--which reminded me of how superb Lalo's score is. The easy listening mixed with action, as mentioned above, is always an attractive combination for me. The "Chicago to KC" cue--and the whole scene for that matter--is maybe my favorite in the film.
