Golden Age Classics: THE WRONG MAN
FSM brings to CD the third collaboration between Alfred Hitchcock and Bernard Herrmann: The Wrong Man (1956), the true-life tale of Christopher Emanuel Balestrero (Henry Fonda) who was wrongly arrested and tried for a series of holdups in New York City.
The Wrong Man was a stark, gritty production for which Herrmann produced a score as low key and subtle as Hitchcock's film. This was, in fact, the score on which Herrmann pioneered the minimal, obsessive style that became his hallmark. Using a pared-down orchestra of brass, woodwinds, percussion, keyboards and a single string bass, Herrmann created a quintessential "Herrmannesque" effort of psychological scoring.
Any Herrmann score is an important addition to a soundtrack collection -- a Herrmann score for a Hitchcock film, even more so. This premiere release of The Wrong Man features the complete original soundtrack in clean monaural sound, with liner notes by Herrmann authority Christopher Husted.

Silver Age Classics: CHECKMATE/RHYTHM IN MOTION
Film Score Monthly brings to CD more outstanding early work from the legendary John Williams: the classic "crime jazz" soundtrack to Checkmate plus the big-band showtunes collection Rhythm in Motion, both dating from 1961.
Checkmate starred Anthony George, Sebastian Cabot and Doug McClure as the members of "Checkmate Inc.," a private firm that specializes in preventing crime before it happens. In his first TV series as primary theme and episode composer, "Johnny" Williams wrote a sizzling main title theme with a beguiling electric guitar ostinato and big-band brass.
Like similiar albums of the time -- such as the famous Peter Gunn record -- the Checkmate LP (which was entirely re-recorded) features a studio rendition of the main title theme, adapted underscore and source cues, and original compositions in the same style. Smoky, moody, melodic and cool, the Checkmate record is a classic from the era.
Rhythm in Motion is not a soundtrack album but a "concept album" by Williams for Columbia Records featuring exciting arrangements of classic showtunes.
These two vintage Columbia LPs are remastered from the original stereo master tapes for sterling sound quality. The booklet features a lengthy essay by Williams expert Jeff Eldridge.

"The Wrong Man" has arrived yesterday. How does the back cover of your booklet look like? Mine is golden and is full of rectangles (one rectangle is left out!). Is this a printing error or is it intended? Is it meant to symbolize the movie (prison?)?
The back cover shows the door of a cell: see the keyhole.
This score forestalls The Twilight Zone and Taxi Driver by its gloomy minimalism.

Got these both with aforementioned Breakheart Pass in time for the long weekend, and just a quick tipping of the hat to the gang at FSM for two grand releases. I gather from the buzz that these are doing quite well, and rightfully so. I hadn't heard the Checkmate theme in 28 years!
