I finally got to see an episode of Miami Vice that featured a score by Tim Truman, "Line Of Fire" from the last season (1988/89).

I was curious about how his music would sound compared to Jan Hammer's. All I can say is: it ROCKED! Truman's score was as good, possibly even better, than Hammer's contributions. Brilliant themes, powerful synth/electric guitar soundscapes and great production. Similar to Hammer, yes, but also with elements of Sylvester Levay or Tangerine Dream.

Opinions?

It's a shame that none of Truman's music from Miami Vice is released on CD.

How about his other stuff, is *any* of his music out on CD?

Is his L.A. Takedown (Michael Mann) score in the same style as Miami Vice?

I love Crockett's theme. I've only heard the Mark Ayres and Ed Starink versions and both are great msehing of electronics with electric guitar.

Tim has been playing his songs on his myspace for the last few months and keeps changing them every month!

www.myspace.com/timtruman

Check it out now and you can listen to the full theme from the last episode "Freefall",
an absolute masterpiece, he used it as the last piece of score in the final ever episode!

Great Stuff! "Grab" it while you can! All in all he's posted up about 10 tracks for listening,
Luckilly i listened to them all and grabbed them all, great!

PS, check out the Helicopter track also! Tim said Michael Mann loved this piece he scored,

Also, Tim posts on the Miami vice forum also! Great guy!

Technologically much more modern and sophisticated than Hammer's work, but that's also a sign of the times- more of an ambient digital new age sound (Korg M1 probably) than Hammer's (then dated by 1988) proggypop. Sounds more like music from a car commercial than an "Invisible Touch" era GENESIS backing track.

This music probably worked very nicely on MIAMI VICE. As a separate listen, it reminds me a lot of the New Age "space music" I used to listen to in the early 90s. Trippy and visual but not very satisfying, ultimately, as it doesn't seem to go anywhere. This is not a criticism, necessarily -- quite a lot of orchestral film music fulfills its purpose on the screen but also translates less well to a pure listening experience. Not very exciting for me.

Absolutely not joking. Play the "Helicopter" track on his Myspace site, it will probably change your mind...

I don't remember that you had any negative remarks about Truman in your FSM article on Vice?

So then, what is it about his stuff that is not as good as Hammer?

Thanks for that link - "Helicopter" is actually from that Line Of Fire episode I was referring to. One of the most brilliant themes I have ever heard. Just listen to how he incorporates the "flapping" sound of the helicopter into the cue. Airwolf's Levay couldn't have done it better.

BTW, the "Jeremiah" track is not from Miami Vice, it's from a show he worked on a few years ago.

I agree that the first track on his site has a certain new age vibe, but it fits MV like a glove.

His MV music was basically endless heavy metal guitar solos.

That's because season five is basically worthless.
After the first three eps it turned into just another cop show. Johnson and Thomas weren't even in many episodes.
The only reason the fifth season exists is because you need 100 eps for syndication.

Perhaps , there is some great music in there, but not in the eps I know well.

Myspace doesnt let you download unless the uploader has allowed it. In Tim's case, for obvious licensing reasons he can't allow anyone to download!

You have to use a program which can record any sound playing on your computer in real time. Basically that means playing the whole song through beginning to end without doing anything else on your pc like clicking your mouse etc, and it saves as a wav file. Then you can convert to whatever format you wish, wma,mp3 etc.

Wow, I listened to the sound clips on his Myspace page. Great stuff! Get this on CD...NOW!

Unfortunately, its unlikely we will see this music released on CD at the moment. Tim has been trying very hard to get his stuff released, but Universal has the rights and we all know how hard they are to convince!

If you recall, Jan Hammer had to re-record a whole CD of score tracks on the "Miami vice ultimate collection 2 CD Set" because of Universal's licence policy.

Nevertheless, Tim has put his music up online as a gift for the Miami vice fans! What an awesome guy!

In the "freefall" track, Tim used the wonderful fairlight "arr" voice which Jan also used a lot. Seemed to be a perfect fit to close out the series.

I think Tim's music is haunting and beautiful, amazing strings and pads, and seemed to take the Miami Vice score into a more calm tone than Jan's scoring.

Jan Hammer's music was awesome, he used so many synths and then used guitar distortion plug ins to create wild guitar like sounds!

Also, If you want to download/hear some cover versions of Jan's music done to almost perfection! Head over to this thread here!
3 Cover tracks using the same equipment as Jan used!

http://www.jan-hammer.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=648&sid=8aa4336534d9dbbffaa9dbca47081dc0

and also here! Many covers by another person, again using same equipment as Jan!

http://www.jan-hammer.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=36&start=0

I'm sure some of you will remember some of this music! Awesome cover versions of Jan's music!

Also, this might be of interest also,

Jan Hammer did the score for a documentary movie called "Cocaine Cowboys" in 2006.

A lot of the score is played on the official website at http://www.cocainecowboys.com

I "grabbed" it and converted it. If anybody needs the tracks, about 8 in total, just let me know your email.

It is quality music! A mixture of Miami vice style sounds with new synths!

I used this one: http://www.mcfunsoft.com/arf/screenshots.htm

I can send you the "freefall","helicopter" and another beautiful track which is no longer on the myspace, called "over the line". I already converted those.

Just let me know your email. They are awesome tracks!
