Wendy Carlos actually released two volumes of her film music and most of The Shining score composed by her appears in some form on these discs. You have to get both though because various cues are spread out between them.

Some of the themes used in the film are composed and conducted by Krzysztof Penderecki. I love the track you guys are referring to also!

The Carlos discs are indeed worthwhile. I liked the additional material from TRON that was included as well, featuring the "Light Cycles" cue that was featured on the deluxe laserdisc edition.

VERY interesting, thanks for sharing the link. I have a "version" of this on CD and I love it so much, the music is just great, a legit CD someday would be most welcome.

There are those that claim that the "promo" you speak of is fully liscenced and legit (just like the Japanese Fright Night), but I have yet to see proof that they aren't just bootlegs.

Yup, that's the one. The notion that they were able to negotiate what Lukas described as convoluted legalities is absurd. But I'm sure those who own one are very adamant that it's a legal release.
"Reflex" also released the 150 "real Fright Night" cd's that were sourced from the lossy bootleg source. Roger Fiegelson has claimed the master tapes are AWOL.
I have a question:
Does anyone know where to find the FILM recording of Polymorphia? The LP is clearly a different recording. Listen to where Jack is chasing Danny through the hedge maze. I've never heard a recording that has the intensity of the strings heard in the film. Same goes for the "Here's Johnny!" scene. The snarling brass is different on the LP .
But Lontano and the Bartok piece are film versions on the LP.

This has always been a topic for discussion because there has never been a legit release (other than the brief withdrawn LP) of the soudtrack. There have been a few bootlegs that appear on ebay but never anything complete. As a long time fan of the music of the movie, Here is all the music in the movie and composer (you can google them for discographys of their work and cds available of them).
- Main Title & Rocky Mountains (Carlos [rediscovering lost scores Vol. 1 & 2])
- Lontano - (Gyorgy Ligeti)
- Music for strings, percussion, & celesta (Bela Bartok)
- Dream of Jacob - Krzysztof Penderecki
- De Natura Sonoris #1 & #2 - Krzysztof Penderecki
- Kanon for Orchestra & Tape -Krzysztof Penderecki
- Polymorphia - Krzysztof Penderecki
- Utrenja - Krzysztof Penderecki
- Heartbeats - (Carlos [rediscovering lost scores Vol. 1 & 2])
The songs are 'Home', 'midnight with the stars and you', 'It's all fogotten now', & 'Masquerade'
Much of the music was mixed and overdubbed so you'll never quite hear anything as exactly as it is heard in the film.
But if you want to acquire and build your own, here is a good start. Enjoy!
A couple of questions:
Question 1: If "Midnight, the stars & you" is played when Jack bumps into Grady and at the end, and "It's all forgotten now" & "Home" is played during the bathroom scene with Grady, where is "Masquerade" played?
Question 2: Who composed/sings "Masquerade"? Thanks.

Read that interview (posted above) with the music editor. It answers at least one of your questions as to why the Penderecki sounds different.

I seem to recall that their is some sort of "RIGHTS ISSUE" that has made an official release of "THE SHINING" not possible, I don't recall what it was exactly, but there is an issue.
