A friend of mine gave me a copy of this score on cd, it's a really beautiful score.
I realise after checking on Soundtrack Colllector that this score doesn't appear to have ever been released offically.
So I wondered if there are any plans by any of our favorite Film Music Specalists to release this fabulous John Barry score.
It's not a long score (30 minutes or so) but I found it a great listen.

I think Silva had the rights to this but then found that the tapes were missing. I think that the b**t originated from Barry's own copy which he kindly copied for a fan.

Others might well be able to clarify.

If only ...

There have been a number of threads on this score the last two or three years. I prefer my DVD rip (with dialogue) to the awful boot - which I paid a lot for before knowing what sort of release it was - doing the rounds. A superb score to a highly enjoyable film.

The story, I believe, goes that Barry gave a cassette copy of the score to a fan way back in the '70s. (i.e. don't assume Barry has a copy now.)

What is interesting is that this had an alternative take of the main title theme.

I believe Peter is correct about the Silva Screen story.

Is there a chance? There's always a chance. But right now, I think the score is on the missing list.

Of course, a label could officially do something from the cassette source. Hey, can't be any worse than using acetates, which has been done before.

But I think people would be holding out for the proper tapes. Which, you never know, might turn up one day. Things on the missing list do get found. Sometimes.

My even bigger hopes are for two others on the missing list: Walkabout and Raise The Titanic. Especially now we know there are unused cues in the Titanic score.

Cheers

I vaguely remember Silva had this marked for release around the mid 90s and had even included it in their catalogue at the time, but withdrew it for 'contractual' reasons. I havent heard anything of it other than the theme, but Ive heard others say its nothing overly special from JB. Still, a release would be very welcome.

If the original elements exist, one hopes that they reside with one of the production companies, specifically Lorimar, now Warner Bros. If the elements are with one of the other production companies, ITV, or with the releasing entity (Avco Embassy, now StudioCanal) access may be a problem. FSM would have access to Lorimar, but I don't believe any of our domestic speciality labels are dealing with ITV or StudioCanal..

It's always frustrated me that this movie has never had an official DVD release in the US. I've always wanted to watch it.

The closest thing we have to a soundtrack release is Silva's re-recording released as part of their Zulu re-recording back in 1999. It's nearly 10 mins and comprises 4 pieces: Play It Again, The Accident, Double Agent, and End Credits. I've never heard the original score but this suite is actually quite good. The main love theme from this suite has since been released on several Silva compilations but don't settle for this--get the original 10 min suite. It has an excellent suspense section that is classic Barry.

Don't believe them!

A gorgeous main (love) theme and an action theme which manages to be typical Barry whilst sounding different from anything else in his long career (perhaps closest are the Raiding Gumbold's Safe cue from OHMSS and the Gathering Speed cue from Game Of Death). Basically a simple tune repeated with increasing intensity which works wonderfully well in the film and is highly addictive.

I tried to acquire the rights to this score last year (one of my favorites of Barrys seventies), but were already licensed to another label.

Frankly, I'm surprised none of the "usual suspects" has jumped on this bit of news. Am I the only one to believe Jose? smile

Well, I'm not really into those posts that just say something pointless like "Cool!" or "ORDERED!"

But, if someone's doing The Tamarind Seed in 2010, that's a most definite and enthusiastic "Hurrah!"

I am most definitely up for it.

It is, as they say (and I cringe as I use this much over-used word), 'a grail' for Barry fans.

Anyone know which label it is?

Cheers

I wonder if they'll release it coupled with another Barry score.

The version I've got only lasts approx 32 minutes, but the music is superb.

I've got the "Silva "suite and although it's very good, it lacks the "punch" of the original.

2010 looks like being THE year for soundtrack releases.

I'd guess Intrada or Prometheus.

It's 32 minutes, why would it need to be paired with anything.

Just be happy it's finally being released.big grin

And for anyone who has or has heard that "unmentionable" release, it doesn't include the "End Title" from the film. So be sure to consider that if you're looking at the length of the music.

Oh believe me I am, I personally don't care how long the cd is, it's getting the music released that counts.

My DVD rip - including source music and the song (heard twice, though not complete either time) - runs for about 46'30" - perfectly long enough for a good album.

Yes, please!
