It's not hard to understand. If this company is indeed in Europe, they are within their rights to take the Fresh Sound CD and copy it wholesale - same with any other CDs of this music. Otherwise their option is vinyl.

Just to clear up a few issues raised on this discussion. The 5-CD box set has been digitally remastered professionally to a very high level and the sources are all the original soundtracks. Moochin about is a 'non-dodgy' ;-) label from London. I have written the 52-page booklet which is an extension of a Jazz on Film column I write for the UK's biggest specialist Jazz Magazine Jazzwise, who have endorsed the set. Sounds like a couple of you are listening to digital samples but if you're interested in purchasing the box, it's available on Amazon UK, Discovery (the UK distributors), HMV and a load of other outlets or the website at www.moochinabout.com where you can get more details.

Thanks -- information much appreciated! I couldn't imagine that this was anything but legitimate, given the care and up-front expense invested in producing such a high quality release. I am weighing the pros and cons of ordering it -- I have much of this material already, in re-mastered form, but STREETCAR, which previously had really never been given a quality release, makes me consider doing so anyway. I think those of us who prefer original recordings over re-recordings must accept the inherent limitations in STREETCAR, given that nearly 60 years have passed since the recordings were made. Not likely that it will ever sound better than what we have here, and that's a consideration.

As expected, the best jazz soundtrack ever is absent (and I mean the best NOIR jazz soundtrack): I WANT TO LIVE by Johnny Mandel. The Moochin About website says that "The second box to be released early next year, provisionally titled The Rebels and the Beats, will feature scores from the films "The Wild One," "I Want To Live!," "Crime In the Streets," "The Subterraneans," and "The Connection." So, it looks like that box set will be ripping off previous CDs issued by Fresh Sound ("The Wild One"), Rykodisc ("I Want To Live!"), Varese Sarabande ("Crime In the Streets"), Sony/FSM ("The Subterraneans") and Universal France ("The Connection").

Not sure why you say "ripping off," Bob. Some of that content is OOP or difficult to get, and it's being made available again, probably with re-mastered sound. "Ripping off" has a highly pejorative connotation, implying that theft is occurring. You have some information about that?

Well, the new box set will most likely be compiled by "ripping" the tracks off of the previously issued CDs. No legal theft of course, just an unlicensed product made from sources other than the original tapes.
