Sad to report that British composer David Whitaker passed away today at the age of 81.
He was best known for his scores for "Vampire Circus", "Scream and Scream Again",
"Hammerhead", "Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde", "Run Wild, Run Free", and more recently,
"With a Friend Like Harry".

David and I became good friends when he did the music on "The Sword and Sorcerer".
My wife and I visited him and his wonderful wife, Sue, during our honeymoon in England.
He was always fun to be around and had a great sense of humor. He will be missed by
his many fans.

I really liked his theme from "Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde" (an underrated movie, as well).

Sad news! If anyone gets the chance, grab the Tricatel compilation album THE DAVID WHITAKER SONGBOOK. A fantastic overview of many of his swinging British work and songs, including his infamous arrangement of "The Last Time".

Whitaker said in an interview for Soundtrack! The Collector's Quarterly that did some orchestrating for Jerry Goldsmith. Can anybody out there back this up?

Sorry to hear of his passing, another talent from that wonderful bygone era of filmmaking has left us.R.I.P David, the old time Hammer talent are all slowly fading away.

Sword and the Sorcerer is a very nostalgic and dear film score to me. I am hoping someone gives it a decent CD release (even if only 1000), remastered and with correct track titles and track order....and more unreleased music would be great. He may have only done very few scores compared to most film composers...but this one affected me in a great way and is in my top 10 favorite film scores of all time. RIP Mr. Whitaker.

Very sad.

A very under-rated and very talented composer. Mr. Whitaker always turned in memorable themes to pictures he scored. Always richly orchestrated, his music was always a lot of fun to listen to.

His music will always be with us... time to listen to some...

My condolences to the family.

His wonderful score for THE SWORD AND THE SORCERER will always stay in my mind.

Like others, I've always enjoyed his score to The Sword and the Sorcerer which I owned on vinyl (I bought the DVD a few years back but the film was not nearly as much fun as I recalled from the original cinema viewing) and I have two themes by him from Hammer films on compilations.

But my collection includes three songs by Matt Monro (album: The Late Late Show) on which he provides the orchestral accompaniment, one of which, The Party's Over, is possibly my favourite song by this superb vocalist.

First time I saw his name was in the impressive opening credits for The Desperados, with jack palance and Vince Edwards. Taped that opening music and always liked the theme. Originally shown in the UK as part of ITVs Savage West series (anyone in UK remember that?) in the summer of 76, I think.

RIP, Mr Whitaker. Seems there was a lot more talent there than the number of film projects he got?

Very sad to hear this.
David Whitaker was an excellent composer, arranger and conductor.
I wished he'd composed more frequently for films.

My deepest condolences to his family.

His SPADA A TRE LAME (among you aka The Sword and The Sorcerer) is among favourite fantasy film scores of mine.

That's sad news. I think he was really underused, there's something special to every score of his I've heard. Like many others, I really love The Sword & The Sorcerer.

Yeah, good call Ryan, that's a lovely album and I believe the only CD release with a selection of his score to RUN WILD, RUN FREE. There's also an achingly beautiful track called 'pavane' on the album, I've no idea what it's from but it's a lovely homage to Gabriel Faure, I wanted to link it here but unfortunately it's not up on youtube.

Hi I interviewed David for soundtrack, he told me that he did some arranging for Goldsmith and I am sure he might have conducted some things for the composer also. He told me that Goldsmith spoke of his score for RUN WILD RUN FREE referring to it as Brahms like
