They had a double challenge here. Not only matching the Steiner sound, but also the indelible suite conducted by Charles Gerhardt. As someone who is extremely skeptical of re-recordings, I gotta say this 'Don Juan' is sublime.
The only exposure I've had to the score is Gerhardt's suite, so I didn't know what to expect from the rest of it. I didn't think my opinion of Steiner could get any higher, but this epic effort cracked that ceiling.
And if there's one compliment I would give the re-recording outside of the excellent performances, it's this: it doesn't drag like so many re-recordings do. William Stromberg plows headlong through it wiithout a moment's hesitation, and that makes a huge difference. It feels like he's channeling Steiner.

The entire presentation is just marvelous. The book inside is very well written and documents the scores scene by scene. Kudos to the unknown, talented chap who took the exhaustive time and energy to do the break downs..

I'd give ARSENIC the same high rating as DON JUAN. Too much reliance on "non-Steiner" tunes, you say? Pish tosh! Aside from one early rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," you have the inspired use of "Happy Land" which Steiner makes his own with his magical arrangement. And the rest of it is Steiner all the way.

Curt Hardaway wrote all the cue by cue descriptions and Ryan Brennan wrote all the background information on the films. And they both get credit, with a small bio paragraph. I am very pleased with the detail and writing style these two do for us....starting with our earlier releases of THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE and THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER. They are informative and fun reads, as I hope the music is fun and entertaining listening.
Although we would have loved to, Ryan and I did not write the liner notes for THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE. They were done by J. B. Kaufman. However, I was fortunate enough to be able to provide promotional material and the press release for that tremendous CD set. In fact, it's one of my favorite press releases I've ever written -- "Honor The Charge he made! Honor Max Steiner's Light Brigade!"
I was so honored to be able to write the cue notes for DON JUAN, one of my favorite scores of all time (and I think that shows in my notes). I really can't say enough about what John, William and Anna have accomplished here, so I'll just let the recording speak for itself. The apex in score re-recordings (along with their MYSTERIOUS ISLAND), as far as I'm concerned.
I've often wondered where DON JUAN ranked in Steiner's own opinion of his scores. It would crush me if it wasn't a favorite of his.
Yeah, it's that wonderful.
