Yes! James Newton Howard is returning to score the second installment of Lionsgate's most popular franchise.

Good news indeed.

Considering the original is the only Newton Howard score I've really liked in probably five years, this is good news...

Finally, a franchise for JNH. I feel that this one will go into the Bourne way. Powell did Identity as a replacement score (he replaced Carter Burwell) where he put the foundations of the musical sound and identity of the trilogy.

Then in the second one, Powell was able to expands those sounds and create great themes, especially with having a new director. Also, given the fact that JNH was confirmed now that Lawrence is shooting the film, it means that maybe he could be working with the cast just like Elfman and Burnett did during the filming of the first film.

Francis Lawrence has been confirmed to direct the two part adaptation of Mockingjay. So this means that JNH will stick for the whole franchise!

Unless he takes a completely different approach with this one I expect another bland atmospheric score. There was nothing memorable about the first one.

I adored the first, although it did take me a bit of time to enjoy it as much as I do now, and I am really excited for this one! Hope it's a longer release timewise, if the number of tracks are any indication (unless they're all short) this looks like it might be longer.

The only thing I know is that the costumes in every clip makes the male stars look bisexual.
But we already saw Stanley Tucci looking womanly in the first one.

Hopefully it does have more running time. I've said before that while the score was pretty low-key in the first film, I think it's fantastic as a solo listening experience. Here's hoping this follows a similar vein.

I'd reserve those phrases for Parkland or After Earth. Hunger Games had some decent minimalistic musical ideas, and the theme used in the duo of "Rue's Farewell" and "Tenuous Winners/Returning Home" was memorable enough - though I still firmly believe that the undermixed choir really betrayed Howard's idea in those.

I actually prefer After Earth to Hunger Games. At least it has some interesting musical ideas even though it is largely atmospheric.

After Earth was great IMO, especially the stretch of detailed, distinctive 'wildlife' music in the middle of the album. Parkland was boring, yes.

30 seconds sample

well, judging by the sample, this will be quite a return for JNH

Apparently so. And according to Amazon this is going to be a 75 minute album - quite a jump from the first one.

Looking forward to picking up the CD!

Catching Fire stands to be one of the better films James has worked on in the past several years. I feel that is going to be reflected in the material he wrote for it. I also believe Francis Lawrence has a good sense of music, at least better than most.

Sounds promising. Would love to hear that JNH orchestral sound from the 90s again.
