This movie is released here in Belgium (and France) today but there's no mention of a soundtrack anywhere. Maybe James Luckard can shed some light on the situation? According to Variety it's a string driven score.

Anyone?

Sorry - I had no idea such a film had been made, let alone was released.

Here in Australia we've had no publicity for it whatsoever. Our huge cinema chains currently feature Skyfall, Hobbit, Les Miserables, Jack Reacher, and animated fare. Lincoln doesn't come out here til February. Not a peep about Renoir in any preveiws or "Coming Soon" posters.

I suspect it may do the rounds of the art-house circuit and inner city independents, should it ever get here.

It may be a sign that our popular culture is becoming increasingly ignorant of the past. Folks here could probably tell you who Justin Beiber is, or dance Gangnam style. I wouldn't be surprised if the same folks had no idea who Renoir was. Perhaps if the film starred Daniel Radcliffe, Robert Pattison, or the aforementioned Beib it may get a look in.

Cheers smile

Unfortunately the movie is not showing around Argentan but I hope I'll be able to watch it end of next week. Third collaboration between film director Gilles Bourdos and Desplat.

Hmm, the two previous Desplat scores for Bourdos films are far from my favorite by him, especially "Inquiétudes" which is the moody, atmospheric Desplat I can't warm up to - "Afterwards" is a lot better but still...

I love that I'm now considered the Desplat expertsmile I have no connection with him, I should add, I'm just a big fan. And there may be others here who know more about this.

That said, this is a French film that premiered at Cannes last May.

Variety's review of the film at the time said this of Desplat's score:

"Technically, this is Bourdos' most ambitious film yet. Regular d.p. Lee, shooting mostly outdoors, works with shifting flecks of sunlight and color, achieving the live-action equivalent of one of Renoir's impressionist canvases while keeping things grounded in a believable reality. Alexandre Desplat's string-driven score adds a dash of energy that keeps the occasionally lingering images from becoming too pastoral or the pacing too languid. Production and costume designs are also top-drawer."

I see no listing for a CD at Amazon.fr, I hope this isn't Desplat's first score in years not to see a release (aside from the score for CARNAGE, which consisted of one cue for the credits.)

Sadly I think there will be no CD for this. The first Desplat score with no release in years, I think.

There appears to have been no French CD, and nobody appears to have bought the film for American release. Pity.

Interesting, these days to see a DESPLAT score not get a CD is like HENRY MANCINI not getting a lp release of his film scores in the mid to late 60's. From 1965 till about 71 only MOMENT TO MOMENT-66- was not release on LP from Henry.I am surprised that film didn't get one. since it was so typical melodic MANCINI.

Once the film has some sort of commercial release, a CD release will follow, so don't lose all hope.

The film already came and went in France at the beginning of the month. It screened at Cannes almost a year ago, but nobody bought it for the US, so it isn't coming out here. Unfortunately I don't think we're getting a CD.

Looks like the film will have a limited release in the US on March 29:

Just saw the Trailer and it's looking good. Hope there is plenty of score in it, is there any news of this being released?

Nothing, unfortunely.

There's plenty of score in it, and the music is quite good (I actually saw it and REALITY back-to-back a few days ago, so it was a nice Desplat Sunday). Sad that there's no sign of a CD. If nothing else, it would be a great choice for a Varese contemporary limited.

I wonder what the music is like?

I saw the film only because you mentioned it. I had no idea it was even playing in L.A. and Orange Counties. (Thank goodness I saw your post.)

I found there to be very little score during the first half of the film. As a matter of fact, I felt that when the score did appear, the film was greatly enhanced by it. It was almost too slow when there wasn't underscore.

I would say if you have heard LA FILLE DE PUISATIER then you have an idea of what portions of the score are like. I wouldn't say that RENOIR is as melodic.

I think there was probably under 30 minutes of score but I would love to be proved wrong. Still, I could see this being issued as you said by Varese (or Colosseum) as a limited release.

It appeared to me that it was recorded in France as I didn't see any of Desplat's usual English crew listed in the credits.

James
