Before the days of Amazon & the Internet. Loved going into their big Oxford Street store on trips to London in the 1970's - so many albums to browse through. (As well as the huge Tower in Piccadilly Circus, Dress Circle, 58 Dean Street Records, etc) British high streets won't be the same now - RIP HMV! I doubt it is all done by one person in one go-you could easily find they charge the card and plan to ship the next day and the administrators close them down before it gets sent. Apparently, despite the presence of so many on-line retailers, HMV still accounts for nearly a quarter of all physical product sold of CDs and DVDs, which must surely be of value to potential purchasers of the existing stores. Hopefully at the very least the Oxford Street store and other stores in the major cities can remain in some form.
