Another casualty on the high street.
So many memories.

Yep, back in the 60's when it was one big record shop in Oxford Street (it had a sign saying, the largest record shop in the world), I spent many hours in there & bought a ton of LP's. A few years back I was spoiled for choice in Londons West End, an HMV, Virgin & Tower Records, all huge stores.

Indeed, I used to use HMV & Virgin in Brighton (England) to get a hold of soundtracks (full price and sales at the end of the year) long ago. Before the days of Amazon & the Internet.

I tend to just pay attention to sales and their airport shop (before it closed) at Heathrow for bargains on older stuff.

Pity, it was pretty much the store I visited when I'm in the UK.

How long will their online store remain open, do you think?

You'd be mad to risk ordering anything from them IMHO. They could fold at any minute and there is no guarantee you'd get your money back.

They've already stated they won't accept the gift vouchers that many people will have received as Xmas presents.

Tell me about it, I was 60 this Christmas, so people bought me HMV vouchers, which was a very kind thought. Now I can't spend them, BUGGER!!!

How is this legal, to take peoples money for gift vouchers and then refuse to honour them?

Thanks Thomas, I still don't think it's right to take peoples money for Gift Vouchers and then not honour them, but what the hell do I know?

Another nail in the high street coffin, another nail in the CD coffin, another nail in the economy coffin...

Pretty soon, takeaways and cafes wont have people in them in the high street because people wont be shopping as there wont be any shops!!!!

One of the longest established names in record stores - I will miss HMV. Loved going into their big Oxford Street store on trips to London in the 1970's - so many albums to browse through. (As well as the huge Tower in Piccadilly Circus, Dress Circle, 58 Dean Street Records, etc)
British high streets won't be the same now - RIP HMV!

They don't charge your card until they ship.

The worse things that might happen are that they don't fulfil your order, or you get something faulty, and they won't let you return it.

I doubt it is all done by one person in one go-you could easily find they charge the card and plan to ship the next day and the administrators close them down before it gets sent.

Why risk it?

Sorry to hear that Chris. Make sure you ask the relleys for CASH in future-trouble is it seems every business that goes bust does the same thing-from what I understand the voucher itself is the purchase so the redemption doesn't count.

So, there won´t be any store left in London? Shame. But maybe just a "natural" development.

Like other posters, I'll miss the big HMV on Oxford Street. Every time I visited London I always made sure I went there, and usually bought quite a few CDs. I especially appreciated the classical area that was walled off from the rest of the store. It was a little oasis of calm.

We don't know that for certain. Game entered administration last year and plenty of its stores are still going. My feeling is this will be a similar thing, they'll find a buyer, there'll be drastic downsizing and closures (there's 230+ stores in the country) but some stores will remain open, at least for now.

Apparently, despite the presence of so many on-line retailers, HMV still accounts for nearly a quarter of all physical product sold of CDs and DVDs, which must surely be of value to potential purchasers of the existing stores. Hopefully at the very least the Oxford Street store and other stores in the major cities can remain in some form. Clearly there must still be many people who don't buy on the internet but it seems there are not enough of them to justify having hundreds of stores.

When that store first opened, it also had a separate entrance - from the front of Oxford Street and down the stairs - to the classical and soundtracks section so one didn't have to pass through and listen to the rock music on the ground floor smile

The store is, I believe, still claimed to be the largest music store in the World.

Wait, what?

We have HMV stores in Canada but I had no idea they were going out of business. Where are you people getting this news? There's no news link posted anywhere in this thread.

Edit: Found it

Many times i used to take the ferry and train to London for a day (i live in Ostend, Belgium), just to visit the 3 record stores,
HMV and Virgin (both in Oxford Street), and Tower at Picadilly, and return home at night with bags full of goodies. Aaaaah, the memories..........
