I'm certain this has been done before (albeit not recently) but I'm trying to make a definitive list of DVDs which replicate the "Roadshow" experience (though many were not actually Roadshows) and contain either an overture, intermission/entracte, exit music or any combination thereof. Paul, thanks for the corrections on Ben-Hur, Spartacus and Fall Of The Roman Empire which I've made. I did know that the entracte following the intermission has been eliminated from Anne Frank which is why I just have "overture, intermission, exit music". Re: Judgment At Nuremburg, yes the intermission and entracte are eliminated from the DVD version. Similarly Star! had an intermission/entracte which isn't duplicated on the DVD transfer (though I believe the laser disc included it). Frank, thanks for the info on Star Trek. I don't have the DVD (not a fan of the film) but I don't recall an overture when I saw it in theaters. Love the Goldsmith score though (who doesn't?).

But one I didn't see was Three Coins in the Fountain. Another was Raintree County. And perhaps also The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm, an excellent FSM release BTW. Raintree Country and Wonderful World Of The Brothers Grimm have not been released on DVD to date so that's why they aren't on the list. I believe the laser disc of Raintree has the overture, intermission and entracte but the laser of Wonderful World Of The Brothers Grimm eliminated the Roadshow trimmings. I never thought of Three Coins In The Fountain as having an overture but you know, you're right. I suppose the Frank Sinatra song before the actual main titles could be seen as an overture.

I just wanted to point out that KING KONG (1933) did not really have an overture. Yes, I know there is on the DVD, however, this is not an overture used in 1933. As many of us know, four 78RPM sides exist from Steiner's KONG score (which can be found within the music suite on the Rhino KONG CD): A Boat in the Fog, Jungle Dance, The Aeroplane, and Finale. Somewhere along the way, possibly in the 1970s, some enterprising film collector took pieces of those four selections, edited them in an "overture," and had it transferred to 16mm film to tack onto the beginning of his print of the film. 16mm copies would turn up for sale from time to time in film collectors' periodicals. I am not slighting the originator of this post for including in the list, but I did want to make it clear that this was not something that was heard by 1933 theatre audiences; it was a contrivance of a much later date. It always irked me that the WB/Turner DVD did not make this clear. Now that I've got that out of my system, I will say that your list is impressive. If I come across any unmentioned examples, I'll let you know.

Thanks for the background on King Kong, Jim. There are a few other contentious titles on the list. The first DVD release of The King And I has an overture, intermission, entracte and exit music. But there is reason to believe it was never released theatrically with any of those nor was it ever intended to be. At least in the United States, perhaps overseas saw it that way. The second release on DVD of The King And I eliminated the "Roadshow" trimmings. I know my old laser disc of Where Eagles Dare (1968) had an intermission and entracte which isn't duplicated on the DVD. The intermission and entracte on the West Side Story DVD is optional and one needs to click on which version you want to see. It was never intended to have an intermission but since it was a Roadshow, United Artists give first run theaters the option of having an intermission should they choose do to so.

I can't believe I left off Doctor Zhivago and Wild Rovers off my list and have added them. Lexedo, Mary Poppins doesn't have any Roadshow trimmings on my DVD. I'm not sure it did theatrically either though some have claimed there was an overture in some of its first run engagements. Joec, thanks for the clarification on the King And I attachments.
