Write about what you love. Share your enthusiasms, not your negativity. There's little point in dumping on other people's favorites.

A civil discussion of conflicting viewpoints is, IMO, much more exciting than badmouthing and hate.

But it is very telling that some obviously can only think of two ways: love or hate.

Absolutely - disagreeing can be as much fun as agreeing. As long as both sides appreciate that there really isn't a "correct" answer.

Another hang up that messes up threads, some people believe that if you don't agree with them they just aren't saying it right! There are those who cannot comprehend that people might simply disagree.

It's how you express disagreement that matters. There's a big difference between intelligently offering an opposing view and crapping on stuff other people enjoy. It helps to actually respond to the other person as if they were right in front of you.

Some good advice there. I'd add two suggestions:

Write about what you love. Share your enthusiasms, not your negativity. There's little point in dumping on other people's favorites.

Ask questions. The community is a great source of information. Asking is often more profitable than answering.

This is the kind of intelligent advice which justifies putting the article here in the first place. There are obviously like-minded people who share concerns about internet behaviours.

I always try to write stuff as if the person was standing in front of me. Too often people hide behind the computer screen and lash out their own frustrations.

This is fundamental.
Everytime somebody shows appreciation towards Horner or Zimmer, for example, immediately some poster jumps on you teaching you how much you are wrong.

Some people here exchange their negativity as something interesting.
