BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25TH CENTURY - SEASON ONE (3CD)

Label: Intrada Special Collection Volume 255
Date: 1979-1980
Tracks: 74
Time = 188:11

3-CD world premiere release of soundtrack music from Season One of cult sci-fi TV series starring Gil Gerard. Generous set features primary episode composer Johnny Harris, who also arranged & conducted numerous versions of Glen A. Larson theme music, plus episode scores from Les Baxter, Richard LaSalle, Stu Phillips. Styles of music emphasize exciting symphonic splendor and colorful sci-fi atmosphere, but listeners will also find some rollicking outer space pop sensibilitiy to balance. While show was broadcast only in mono, Universal fortunately elected to record in 1/2" three-channel stereo format with vivid, punchy dynamics. Engineers recorded with mono in mind but happily ensured stereo mixes were possible for internal needs. All rolls of tape were vaulted in pristine condition. Sole exception is second portion of "Plot To Kill A City" (Stu Phillips) which survives on 1/4" full track (mono) tape only. Source cues by Stu Phillips (Jelly Belly, three others) round out collection. John Takis offers authoritative notes on show, episodes, music. Interior packaging includes array of color stills plus complete cue/slate assembly details & full track titles. Composers conduct their own contributions.

For this volume, Intrada presents suites from the following episodes on this 3-CD set:

Planet of the Slave Girls (Johnny Harris)
The Plot to Kill a City (Stu Phillips)
Return of the Fighting 69th (Johnny Harris)
Vegas in Space (Les Baxter)
Aradala Returns (Johnny Harris)
Space Rockers (Johnny Harris)
Unchained Woman (Richard LaSalle)

Ordered with SALEM'S - tad disappointed that more of the pilot isn't on the set, but then again, I have the album for the film version, so I guess I have enough of that already.

My copy is ordered, I will be very happy to have music from this series on disc, especially more Stu Phillips. I really love his music for the original "Galactica" and "Buck Rogers" was always the lighter side of that particular TV sci-fi twin package from Glen Larson. Even checking out the samples I am reminded of the kicky, disco pop feel, guitar & bass guitar action mixed with the dynamic orchestra. Fun stuff!

Ordered! smile Likewise just a tad disappointed the pilot in its full glory isn't present (the original album is rather short, especially if you take off the reprise of the song), but still utterly shocked we're getting any further music from Buck Rogers at all! Best to focus on what we HAVE got wink It's been a while since I've seen any episodes, so will be able to take the scores 'on their own terms' as it were. Cannot wait to hear this.

Fantastic to finally have a high quality version of of the theme, plus variations no less. Like Salem's Lot, these samples sound fantastic. Great job Intrada and thanks to everyone concerned! Sounds like it was recorded yesterday!

I have ordered this and Salem's Lot, which I imagine will probably (combined) net me the additional charges for importing items into the UK. Still, well worth it to finally have a couple of Holy Grails ticked off the list wink

In this new set the BUCK ROGERS music of ISC Vol. 60 (http://store.intrada.com/s.nl/it.A/id.5746/.f) seems to be missing... WHY? Unfortunately I didn't buy that vol. 60... frown

The correct link is in the very first post wink

EDIT: This does serve to highlight the fact the Intrada release of the pilot/movie music is now out of print. Perhaps a full version might be in the works... fingers crossed. My favourite piece of music in the pilot/movie is the bit where Buck looks out over his new city/home for the first time, with Wilma. Beautifully melancholy piece of music (and a terrific matte painting of the city in the film!), and typically not on the album. Been after that for decades. I think there's some more music missing from the Anarkia section of the film too (wish they'd explored that some more in the TV series). Again some very melancholy, not to mention spooky music.

Hopefully if this set sells well..... wink

I was just poking around the samples and found something neat on Disc 3. "Prison Approach" by Richard La Salle has a little moment that sounds just like a moment in LOST IN SPACE "The Derelict." La Salle is one of three credited composers on "The Derelict."

Sadly, the score masters for the pilot/movie are gone, according to Roger. We're fortunate to have the bonus source music on this new set, but otherwise the original album is all that seems to have survived.

Thanks Wedge, now that you posted that, I seem to remember the lack of tapes mentioned in the thread discussing the re-release of the album on cd. Oh well, still very happy with what is coming.

I'm very happy that this came out and I ordered it. A little disappointed not to see anything from episode 18? A dream of Jennifer. Music by John Cavacas. Any chance it will be on volume 2?

Given that "volume 2" is by all accounts "season 2," it doesn't seem likely.

EEEEEEXXXXXXCCCCCCCCEEEEEELLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEENTTTTT

ORDERED!

And at $10.- per CD, not a bad price either though I'm sure I buy it now just to see it go at $9.95 in a year's time. But that's okay because I will have had a year's worth of the good stuff.
Aaah but no "Space rockers".
Well we have to remedy that in this thread too:

That reminds me, Disco Stu -- in the liner notes, I describe the members of Andromeda as "glow-stick-bedecked," when they are clearly "light-strip-bedecked." Mea culpa!

Iam also very happy and surprised about this release.

But I see, that not only Cacavas wasnt presented in this Season 1 Volume, neather was there one note of J.J. Johnson`s music (and he done a lot of episodes for season one).

I would like to know, how the peopel at Intrada make theire choises, wich scores from Season 1 they release.

Was it a matter of taste or of avaible sources?

Maybe theire will be a SEASON 1, Volume 2?

Who knows.

Anyway, I just will enjoy this Volume now.

Well, I made the mistake that the "Space rocker" opening song wasn't in the set. I heard the samples, and HOORAAY I WAS WRONG IT'S IN!! A search of 20 years has come to an end!

My galactic gratitude goes to interstellar Intrada.
We're getting a lotta bang for and from our Buck.

Why ? the Music to "Awakenings" / Theatricalversion was already released by Intrada a few years ago and is unfortunately OOP.
