Any word on the validity of the 3-D in this one? I might make the extra effort to support Andrew Stanton's vision of ERB's Barsoom stories. It was post-converted into 3D. Stanton shot it on film, expecting it to be shown in 2D, but Disney said "Nope, 3D brings in more money." Not from me it didn't. Insisted on 2D. It's actually fine. Not perfect, but I enjoyed it. http://streetrw.blogspot.com/2012/03/john-carter.html

Saw it in 3D and it was pretty great but I saw it in 4K Sony Projection so it was nice and bright [almost too bright WITHOUT the glasses]. Anyone know what track plays during Carter's flashback to his past while he fights loads of aliens ? When he mentions that "I was too late once"

Anyone know what track plays during Carter's flashback to his past while he fights loads of aliens ? When he mentions that "I was too late once" That's the track infamously called "Carter They Come, Carter They Fall." And that particular sequence of the movie is what hooked me emotionally to the story. There were so many things I liked about this film that I could easily forgive any shortcomings. I saw it last night at a midnight showing and thoroughly enjoyed it. Then, after reading so many mediocre and negative reviews I wondered if maybe I hadn't been sleep-deprived when I watched it. So I went back and watched it a second time this afternoon. And I actually liked it even more the second time - knowing how the story unfolds, its supposed pacing and exposition problems (which didn't bother me the first time), made the ride even more fun than the first time. I guess I have enough of an inner child in me that can still be swept away by a romantic science-fiction fantasy (with heavy emphasis on the fantasy). As for Giacchino's music - it was well placed in the film and makes for an even better listening experience on its own. If you're not a Giacchino fan, then there's really not much that will win you over with this score. But if you are a fan of his, you'll find the music is a wonderful synthesis of his style as heard in Lost, Star Trek (2009), and Super 8; with a few new touches in percussion and brasswork that was very apt for the other-worldly nature of the film. In fact, a couple places reminded me of music I've heard in Star Trek: TOS. My only concern is, if he continues both franchises, how will he separate the sound worlds of Star Trek and John Carter?

Not from me it didn't. Insisted on 2D. It's actually fine. Not perfect, but I enjoyed it. I know what you're saying (and Disney made the 2D and 3D versions easily available instead of one over the other), but I'm just referring to Disney's CEOs overriding Stanton and insisting on a 3D conversion. Even though the 3D fad isn't as popular as it was late 2009/early 2010, the 3D surcharges do pad out the box-office totals. Most of the people who went to the movie today opted for the 2D version, anyway. The best thing about the 3D John Carter was the Avengers 3D trailer. The AVENGERS trailer did look EPIC in the 3D... I must say!

Why are some Giacchino scores so poorly recorded. First M:I4 now this. The sound is vomit-inducing Not on my CD. And not on my download.

Why are some Giacchino scores so poorly recorded. First M:I4 now this. The sound is vomit-inducing It was not poorly recorded. It just the type of sound that Giacchino likes, courtesy of Dan Wallin. Shame. It is his music and thus his choice but I can't say it isn't a shit choice to my ears. I got the CD and it does sound indeed sound flat [thought it was my Mp3 VRB Lame so I listen to the FLAC files] which is just awful considering how wonderful and lush the score sounds in the film. Now I know why M:I III always sounded like a high school orchestra... Thank goodness SPEED RACER sounds great!

Saw the midnight premiere, and I really liked it. Later that day, the soundtrack arrived. The thing I've found about Giacchino is that he makes really great themes, but then sometimes uses them a bit too often. When Star Trek came out, I kept thinking how I heard its main theme every two minutes. With John Carter, he uses JCM's theme quite often, seemed like in almost every track, but he offers enough variations to keep it feeling more fresh. The Fight for Helium may be my favorite track. Last night I had the urge to go see it again, and I actually loved it even more the second time around. The score had plenty of moments when it was allowed to shine, like "Sab Than Pursues the Princess", and John Carter's "Superman" moment.
