Zimmer's sound from the 80's and 90's is much more a wall of sound than it has been since at least The Davinci Code. Hannibal was also so not a wall of sound, but a very varied score. If Zimmer and Christopher Nolan are on their game, the movie and soundtrack will have quiet parts and (of course) loud bombastic action sequences.

The rest of the population doesn't care for the film score either, and neither do the Warner Bros. Executives - all they care about is making a "bucK" - and the way to do that, is to Target the correct audience, which in most CINEMA RELATED CASES, is the teenage market out there who bring in the bread and butter for the film studios.

As mentioned above, all you really need to do is walk into a fashion store, to hear what kind of music dominates our pop culture, and that is the kind of material you get in these movies.

Not the memorable Movie Themes of the 70s and 80s which were John Williams "golden period" - Let's all hope that Mr. Williams still gets the new Star Wars project - those might be the last great scores we'll ever get!

The general population never cared about the film score. And since the mid 70's it's always been about the "teen" market. Having thematic scores weren't a problem back then. It didn't hurt movie ticket sales. Whom ever decided quality thematic film music will hurt box office sales are complete morons or jackasses. Take your pick.

i suspect it's a little less specific than that. i don't think studio executives specifically think "quality thematic film music" hurts box office performance, they just believed zimmer and co's music worked and sought to replicate that sound. i sincerely doubt any executives really think about themes or motifs, etc; they're thinking in much broader, arguably stupider terms.

that said, i don't have a problem with zimmer. he's not my favorite, but i don't get the vitriol and i'm looking forward to man of steel. i thought the music in the trailer was appropriately triumphant and nice change of pace from zimmer's usual, darker material.

The promo picture of the set at Amazon.co.uk gives a little more about the duration of CD 2 :

"Disc 2 - 28 min Man of Steel (Hans' Original Sketchbook) + 6 additional pieces of music (around 30 min extra music), all composed by Hans Zimmer"

"Disc 2: experiments from the fortress of solitude". Uh oh... I smell remixes and suites rather the score cues.

I wonder how much truth is in that?

After listening to the samples posted a while back, I find myself intrigued enough to want to hear more. I don't really find his music nuanced enough to warrant me keeping it on my ipod for more than a year. Having said that, I mostly enjoy listening to it for that period and I think, from these samples, I might quite like to put it on my iPod.

Im excited about getting these sets, but for some reason Im not as excited as when Superman Returns came out. I couldnt wait to get my hands on that CD. I will surely purchase both versions of this release and include them on my iPods but whether or not I listen to them over and over like I did for the previous films is...up for debate.

Why purchase both? I thought there was nothing on the standard edition that's not on the special edition?

It is my understanding that both versions will have content that both will not have. So I figured in order to have as much as possible, I would just purchase both.

No, just read the main post. Both feature the exact same disc 1 and first track on disc 2. Only difference audio-wise is the DE contains six additional tracks on disc 2.

Definitely the music from the trailer. Which I liked!

More of that kind in the rest of the score would be great. I really hope the samples on the Amazon-site were totally misleading.
