Williams is still working. Has he been offered this film to score?. If not, why not?

It all depends of the kind of movie they'll be doing. It will be complicated, but it's a new Star Wars for new generations, and it needs the same kind of refreshment in the music. So I hope people can be open minded with this one and not to ruin another saga with their bias. Why does the music need refreshing?

John Willliams is still the best composer writing music for movies, so why a "refreshment in the music"? That's ridiculous.

If John Williams is willing and able they won´t be able to ignore him. But he might just reject the offer - been there, done that. And just as Lucas himself has stepped back to let others go on, Williams might excuse himself. For my taste, it would be fantastic to have Michael Giacchino do it. After his tremendous work for JOHN CARTER I´m looking forward to another huge space opera score from him.

I think Abrams has enough clout to bring his go-to composer along for the ride. Also, while Zimmer is big news, Giacchino is hardly small cheese, having won an Oscar for UP and works for Disney regularly.

It would be nice if Williams could continue. I thought one of the strengths of the original triology scores was that there were 3 different directors and, as a result, 3 very different scores by the standards of sequels. In contrast, prequels, though each slightly different, had more sameness from score to score. Having a new director would I think infuse freshness to Williams' approach in the same way that Azkaban was a fresher score with a new director as compared to the Chamber score which varied very little stylistically from the first Harry Potter. But I assume it will be Giacchino which could still be very interesting to hear. It is also interesting the extent to which Giacchino has become, more than anybody, the composer of pastiche, reboots, sequels from an older era, etc. Makes sense given his influences, his stated reverance for that tradition and then just his compositional talent. The Abrams association is a big part of that I suppose since Abrams, fairly or unfairly, is Mr. Sci-fi with enough "street cred" to bridge the generational gap. No doubt a big factor in Disney going after him. - Adam

Might as well believe it, the rest of the world does. Sure, Giacchino is an Oscar winner and has done films for Disney but mainstream audiences don't know his name. Mainstream audiences know Zimmer's name. Disney is going to be thinking merchandise here. I don't think main stream audiences know jack about composers and Zimmer is just as much a "who the hell?" as Giacchino. Star Wars = John Williams to anyone who has the slightest notion of the music. But it's not the 70's or 80's anymore and John Williams is not the household name he once was. All people know is the main themes and if those are intact, that's all the regular moviegoers will care about, if that much. Honestly, nobody cares about the music but score geeks like us. I don't think Hans Zimmer is a big merchandising name. "Did you get the latest Star Wars toys?" "No, I had to get the music by ZIMMER!" No, like The Avengers, the name brand and the characters will sell the film. Alan Silvestri didn't factor into it. If Disney wanted Abrams, then they'll probably let him pick his very successful, Oscar winning composer who has done good work for the company to give Star Wars its identity. If Disney is smart, they won't want to alienate the Star Wars core fans and will probably want to keep the style similar. Since the director is different, the music will probably be in the same vein. If so, this leaves Zimmer out. If John Williams is willing and able they won´t be able to ignore him. It's been said that if John Williams is willing and able they'd have to use him. Well, he was willing and able for the last Harry Potter movie and he wasn't called. The thing is, nobody here knows and there are no absolutes yet.

Well I would prefer a Giacchino Star Wars to a Zimmer one- not that I dislike Zimmer any more. I think Mike G will do it justice though I would be curious to hear what John Powell would do with it if he ever had the chance.

Most likely the two main choices to do the music are Williams and Giacchino. I'd be fine with either. I'm just wondering if I'll need new Ray Bans for the huge lens flare that's sure to accompany the light saber ignitions. Seriously, though, I am so looking forward to this - more than Star Trek, because Abrams is primarily a SW fan.
