When you see him later today might you inquire about whether his score to S*P*Y*S exists somewhere in his archives?

Yavar

Excellent idea, I've never even thought to ask about that one - nor have I ever heard a single note of it!

Neither have I, as I've barely ever been outside of the U.S. and Jerry Goldsmith's score was what was used here. But I love Scott's music so much that the presence of his score on a new complete album of Goldsmith's from Intrada (or other label, but just wanted to nudge Roger a little bit since he's here, haha) would be a DEFINITE plus!

Come to think of it, I don't even know the Goldsmith score for S.P.Y.S. I think I always just assumed given the era and subject matter that it'd be a kind of jazz or pop-driven sound that wouldn't appeal to me. Am I far off?

Kinda, yeah. The part that probably wouldn't appeal to you is the synthy element (though they are being used as a weird extra instrument rather than being used to replace the orchestra at all). But the score is actually full of jokey references to classical/traditional music more than any jazz or pop elements. Think of it as akin to his zanier work for Joe Dante...except even more zany than that, if possible. My favorite cue is "Anybody Got a Key?" which is just NUTS...references to classical music, but also balalaikas and what sound like Russian male vocals let loose, all over some breathless racing strings and little fun solos by various other orchestral instruments. It's extremely energetic, creative stuff...I'd even call it brilliant in its way. An unjustly maligned score that I find more entertaining and engaging than some other ones people seem to like *cough*KingSolomon'sMines*cough*.

It's certainly not something I'd recommend to most people...but if you're someone who can enjoy the delights of Looney Tunes: Back in Action, then this even wackier score might be right up your alley.

Well I did say it’s not for everyone, by any means.

Bobb, would you drop me a line at Moradi (dot) Yavar (at) Gmail?

Any thoughts on Inseminoid?

Any thoughts on Inseminoid?

I'm afraid I can't say I hold this one in high regard. One of only a small handful of synth scores John's ever done, and it's not synth out of creative necessity but rather financial obligation. Fans of that kind of scoring might be better-qualified to comment on its worth, as I'm quite biased against this kind of sound!

I love syth scores myself, but alas, there's indeed a difference in quality between using it out of creative choice (Goldsmith) and using it due to lack of a budget for an orchestra (Richard Band).

Indeed there is.

I'll let you decide in this case:

Just discovered (the, I have to admit, unpromising sounding and titled) Shogun Mayeda. What a terrific score! A proper old fashioned (in a good way) swashbuckler. He did score some pretty random films though!

Yes, John has lamented that he's never really been in much control of what projects came his way, and that he took just about any film he was able to land. Indeed his filmography is all over the map as far as prestige, budget and so forth is concerned - running the gamut from handsomely-mounted Oscar nominated films (Greystoke) to Razzie-winning no-budget schlock (INSEMINOID) often just a year or two apart. Strange indeed, but at least what music he has given us is so consistently wonderful and distinctly of his own creations across so many films (except, uh, stuff like Inseminoid...)

I remarked to him recently on the quality of WALKING THUNDER, his fantastic mid-90's western score, and how such effort and thought went into such an irrelevant no-budget waste of film. His response, in keeping with his overall outlook and work ethic, was that he was "hired to write the best music he could, not lazily phone something in and call it a day."

Would anyone happen to know if MAN ON FIRE is one of those Varese 'in-perpetuity' titles? John might have the tapes for that one too, and the (terribly sequenced) original album omitted massive swashes of score (including one affecting, recurring theme for the little girl in the film that's barely heard at all on the album).

Bob, did you see my query to you in the Michiru Oshima thread?

I did, I'l get back to you soon Saul.

FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST is her masterpiece for me but the soundtrack album, like most Japanese scores unfortunately, is a mess - broken up over many volumes released sometime years apart, interspersed with lots of annoying peppy pop songs, frequent piano solo tracks that have nothing to do with the score proper, etc. to say nothing of the hardship of acquiring these albums in "the west" where they're often very expensive imports.

But Youtube is definitely your friend when it comes tot his stuff as far as finding out what's best!

That list is not the be-all and end-all of whether Varese controls a title; it's just an attempt to compile what we know. I'm 100% certain it's only a fraction of what they control. Since they did release it as an "Encore" title it may be that they control it; I think someone at a label would have to inquire about this specific title and then inform us.

As I've been further and further realizing lately, Far From Home is an INCREDIBLE work! I can't wait to hear more from this dude (I also have The Deceivers and Lionheart).
