CHARLES STROUSE was born on JUNE 7 ,1928 in NEW YORK CITY. He composed music for films from the 60's into the 90's with efforts like BONNIE AND CLYDE, THE NIGHT THEY RAIDED MINSKY'S ,THERE WAS A CROOKED MAN, ETC ETC. Charles was also a successful Broadway composer who had hits like BYE BYE BIRDIE, ANNIE, ETC. However it is very likely his best known tune was the theme from ALL IN THE FAMILY, THOSE WERE THE DAYS, the opening theme song from that groundbreaking smash of a sitcom from the 70's. Charles is currently 86 years old.

I always loved his ONCE UPON A TIME from the play THE ALL AMERICAN. There has been a bunch of singers who have done a version of that song in solid style. Poignant with a capital P.

And, it's the only one to my knowledge that's ever been released on LP/CD. God speed the day when someone makes available his great score for THE JUGGLER, my personal favorite. Meantime, his symphonies are on CD and well worth a listen, also a ballet.

To me there will never be anything quite like the main theme from FLATLINERS-90 If that was the only score JAMES did he would still have done something wonderful in his life. A HOLY GRAIL OF EMOTIONAL IMPACT THAT JUST STIRS MY VERY SOUL. Maybe it is just as well it is not on CD if it was I might play it to much and not appreciate the pure beauty of the piece.
