Been listening to both CDs for the last two weeks, and I'm not too crazy about disc 1 either.

I hope it'll grow on me: I wish I'd share the journey-under-the sea feel described in the liner notes but...

It isn't my favourite Barry score (I find it a bit depressive), but there are still some superb moments in it. I love the main theme, and it's good to have the bits I do like in great sound, so thank you very much Intrada and everyone involved in working on this - much appreciated.

I listened to this again today, as it's one of my favorites. It's wonderfully hypnotic and the main theme is gorgeous.

Donna Summer sang the source music cue during the dinner scene with Nolte and Bisset, correct? It's more of a slow, jazzy arrangement with a slight lyric change. It would have been nice to include that version of the song, but I'm not complaining. This wonderful Intrada release will always be one of my favorites.

According to an article in the current CINEMA RETRO, the film was shown in 70mm and stereo in some venues.
You would have thought stereo masters would exist for the complete score.
?
Brm

Coming soon from Intrada:
THE DEEP the COmplete score in STEREO!
3 cd set.

Lol.

I just looked at the opening day ad in the New York Times and it did not play in 70mm (at that time at least, and it would be odd if they made 70mm later). But the two screens in Manhattan are designated as having "4-track stereophonic sound." As this was technically an independent production, by a company that soon folded & then got acquired and reacquired, it's not terribly surprising that the stereo masters for the score disappeared. As Barry made a separate recording for the album it's a miracle that the film tracks exist at all.

Thanks for this Mike, so the suite on the original album (Return To The Sea - 2033 A.D.) was a separately re-recorded piece?

I thought the suite was created editorially from the film tracks.

Remember that the Intrada CD is a release of the first round of recordings but does not contain the evident revisions that Barry did. The suite contains the versions finally used in the film.

I agree. I love this expanded soundtrack. This soundtrack had huge sentimental factors for me in the early 1980’s surrounding issues that were going on at the time. I first saw the movie on TV then heard the soundtrack on the cassette I borrowed from the local library over and over again until I had played it to death!

I can’t say an expanded edition was ever a holy grail but this came as a very pleasant surprise when it was released. The original soundtrack was ok but followed a pattern at the time of exploiting the hit song rather than the rest of the music, but that was ok.

There was a blue copy of the vinyl release that was always in a local record shop where I lived but I never bought it, preferring other releases but when it had finally sold, I wished then that I had bought it!

It is another soundtrack that I prefer listening to in one sitting and I find The Dove soundtrack is the perfect counter to this.

THE DEEP is, hands down, my favorite score ever. Just a lovely ode to the sea.

A top ten-or-twenty all-time great Barry theme, and some of the finest atmospherics that Barry ever produced. That thick acoustic rendered in the final mixes is just as important as the water in giving the viewer an "immersed" feeling.

This would seem a prime candidate for the Tadlow or Prometheus re-recording treatment. I doubt it will be considered due to the relative homogeneity of some of the great atmospheric long cues.

Hard to believe that during this movie's pre-release promotion in grade-school pamphlets and magazines such as the Weekly Reader, which touted all the underwater action and photography, there was no mention of the also-upcoming release of the original Star Wars.

I thought The Deep film was the most spectacular thing on the horizon, at the time.

Were the underwater scenes considered thrilling at the time?

I enjoy movies from this era, but the action in this film and the pacing in general just seems so static.

I’m curious as to how it was initially received after all the hype. I know her white t-shirt was a big hit. wink

'77 was nothing like even '87, as the amount of film and box-office coverage was relegated to short pieces at the end of newscasts or a short gossip segment on the network morning news shows.
Getting a half hour of media centric coverage everyday via Entertainment Tonight (which debuted in '81) was a big deal for a movie nerd like myself.
Unfortunately now this kind of lightweight news is the tail that wags the dog

Anyways, I remember the Deep being seen mostly as an underperformer both critically and at the BO, because with the pedigree of Benchley and Robert Shaw, the movie was simply no Jaws (just like Ridley Scott + Harrison Ford didn't make Raiders Meets Alien).

I kind of love The Deep. It's a couples vacation-adventure film to me, and it works well on that level with a lot of strong talent in front and behind the camera. I prefer to think of the pace as more languid than static. It has bursts of action/violence, but it's mostly a languid quest movie.

I do remember that the studio rather shamelessly promoted the film in playboy (the Patti McGuire POTY issue- hubba hubba) with gatefold all it own

looks like someone had a copy matted and autographed

I find The Deep to be a very boring score.

And John Barry is my favorite composer.

Go figure.

I was able to score a fine copy of this off Amazon Marketplace at a remarkable low ball used price just a couple years ago.

I'm happy to have it, but TBH whenever I want to hear this material I opt for the extended stereo suite on the original soundtrack release. I'm thankful Intrada saw the value in including that in the overall package.
