According to an article in the current CINEMA RETRO, the film was shown in 70mm and stereo in some venues. You would have thought stereo masters would exist for the complete score. ? Brm Coming soon from Intrada: THE DEEP the COmplete score in STEREO! 3 cd set. Lol.

I just looked at the opening day ad in the New York Times and it did not play in 70mm (at that time at least, and it would be odd if they made 70mm later). But the two screens in Manhattan are designated as having "4-track stereophonic sound." As this was technically an independent production, by a company that soon folded & then got acquired and reacquired, it's not terribly surprising that the stereo masters for the score disappeared. As Barry made a separate recording for the album it's a miracle that the film tracks exist at all.

Thanks for this Mike, so the suite on the original album (Return To The Sea - 2033 A.D.) was a separately re-recorded piece?

Thanks for this Mike, so the suite on the original album (Return To The Sea - 2033 A.D.) was a separately re-recorded piece? I thought the suite was created editorially from the film tracks. Remember that the Intrada CD is a release of the first round of recordings but does not contain the evident revisions that Barry did. The suite contains the versions finally used in the film.

Listening to this after a long hiatus... and absolutely loving it. One of those perfect summer vacation scores... with images of deep sea...

A top ten-or-twenty all-time great Barry theme, and some of the finest atmospherics that Barry ever produced. That thick acoustic rendered in the final mixes is just as important as the water in giving the viewer an "immersed" feeling. This would seem a prime candidate for the Tadlow or Prometheus re-recording treatment. I doubt it will be considered due to the relative homogeneity of some of the great atmospheric long cues. Hard to believe that during this movie's pre-release promotion in grade-school pamphlets and magazines such as the Weekly Reader, which touted all the underwater action and photography, there was no mention of the also-upcoming release of the original Star Wars. I thought The Deep film was the most spectacular thing on the horizon, at the time.
