roll eyes
Exactly what does this contribute to the thread? Nice.

Something important regarding Varese Sarabande's new release of Alex North's Spartacus and film music publishing in general.

I ordered the set as soon as I learned it was available - despite having open reel recordings of the material included on discs 2-4 for nearly 35 years, and disc 1 for the past three. The Varese source for the mono soundtrack recordings was probably from North's collection, from which my copies ultimately devolved. Are the original stereo tracks truly lost - or is it possible that the mono release was a financial consideration based on the cost of transferring the mag tracks? At any rate, the sound on the web samples is far superior to my aged tapes.

The mere fact that there have been this many posts about the extra content and price of this release have proven my point. It's sad that this magnificent score has been priced out of reach of many people who have helped Varese survive all these years by religiously buying their albums - me included. This manuever by Varese has taken the gloss off of what would have otherwise been a tremendous gesture to fans of this score and all great film music. But, as others have posted, Varese has never been all that "fan friendly".
I find it amusing that many of the people who have ordered made a point of saying that even they think at least two or three of the discs are unnecessary.
Lastly I speculate that if this release had been done by MY favorite soundtrack CD company, FSM, they wouldn't have pulled this stunt. They DO seem to give a damn about film music fans.

I'm sorry, but the naysayers in this thread DON'T constitute many buyers for Varese. It's eight pages of posts by a smallish number of people, none of whom (pro or con) constitute a huge loss in profit margin for this particular release.

Truth is, though, that the set is wondrous in concept, should be a marvel to own and will sell. It's a crown jewel of a score dressed up to be the crown jewel in any collection.

Varese won't be subject to a massive backlash of outrage and won't be forced to reduce the price and won't toss out two CDs and a DVD just to please a handful of folks.

The real truth here is that for just about every new release, "fans"...for some reason or other...get bent out of shape over any number of things -- that too few were printed, or too many were printed, that there is not enough music on it, that there is too much music on it, or that it should have been this/should have been that/they should have considered the fans, meaning a handful of complainers but, by and large, never the majority.

"Spartacus", as it turns out, is not an exception to that real truth.

I will be greatly disappointed if the bootleg contains more stereo recordings than this new legitimate release. I want to pay for and encourage the legitimate publication, but if the publishers fail to even reach the quality and quantity of recordings an illegitimate publication contains, unfortunately I would rather see that publisher no longer supported.

So, what you are saying is that you are serving notice that if you are unhappy with what you hear on the recording, that you are going to start an international movement to drive Varese Sarabande and Universal (the music publishing arm) out of business?????

For all the "extras" contained in any release, the only significant value is the publication of the original recordings the publication is addressing. Any opinions, analysis and subsequent recordings by others are mere appendages.

Are you a lawyer? I think your vernacular is a bit too over-analytical and that you have misjudged your intended audience.

Time will tell whether this Spartacus is a valuable publication or a expensive reject. Let that reflect wholly on the publisher and may they be treated accordingly.

Time has already told us plenty in this thread alone.

I think many of the complaints were that the set is too expensive. That's certainly a legitimate grievance in these troubled economic times. It limits this music to the people with disposable income, and of course to those who will copy it for friends. Being something of a cynic, I think that the extra discs of "Varinia" variations, the interviews, etc. are possibly an egregious means of ratcheting up the price of the set. I've already stated that I bought the set, but I feel for those who can't.

There is a 160 page book! What the )(*&^ is going to fill that? If my order is delivered okay I'll find out but speculation is welcome.

I already have one Alex North book by Henderson with forward by John Williams and analysis of Spartacus amongst other North works. Will the book simply be full of verbose praise for North and a whole lot of images from Spartacus?

I'm hoping Varese's publication be more Spartacus than Crassus. High hopes.

Oh my GOD - the ingratitude! The ingratitude!

Yeah, you "helped" Varese survive all these years out of the kindness of your heart - not because they created product you wanted to purchase. Get off your high horse and stop acting like Mother Theresa.

This manuever by Varese has taken the gloss off of what would have otherwise been a tremendous gesture to fans of this score and all great film music. But, as others have posted, Varese has never been all that "fan friendly".

Right... it's a "maneuver" by Varese to disenfranchise you - because there's so much profit to be made in disenfranchising film score fans!

As I stated earlier, perhaps this creeping paranoia is a sad byproduct of our current economic climate, but do the math. This set was undoubtedly expensive to produce, and Varese is entitled to make a profit - however small or however large that profit may be.

And what came first, the chicken or the egg? Perhaps Varese isn't "fan friendly" because they read one too many smug, childish, ungrateful, uninformed statements like yours.

Lastly I speculate that if this release had been done by MY favorite soundtrack CD company, FSM, they wouldn't have pulled this stunt. They DO seem to give a damn about film music fans.

Ah, I see. Your entire rant was actually a sycophantic love poem to FSM.

Can someone please explain to me how a record label can produce a lavish box set of the complete score of SPARTACUS, yet somehow it's a "stunt" and they don't give a damn about film music fans?

Waxmanman35, it just doesn't make sense that Varese would spend the money to record 22 new versions of the SPARTACUS love theme just to "ratchet up the price of the set."

And if you break it down, $110 for six CDs, a DVD and a 168 page book is actually a reasonable price.

Looks like Varese had access to everything -

Produced with the cooperation of Universal Pictures, Universal Special Markets and Geffen Records ...

Precisely.

So much total nonsense has been posted in this thread up to this point that I'm exceedingly embarrassed for all of us.

I totally agree, Ron. I'm really sadden and embarrassed by all of the bitchey complaints, very sad, indeed.

I feel the same... at the risk of sounding melodramatic, the level of ingratitude in this thread makes me want to leave this message board for good. I can't abide the idea of being lumped in with so many spoiled children.

As a friend of mine often says, the weeds choke the flowers. No matter how many facts or intelligent rebukes we post, they'll always be drowned out by a cacophony of nonsense.

Dreadful.
Judging by your posts in this thread, you could probably fill a book of that length with just your own mean-spirited and unappreciative thoughts.

No doubt about it; this is an absolutely terrific release; I just hope I'm able to afford it soon. My one major caveat is the same as many others'. Even accounting for the popularity of the Love Theme over the years (and its long history of different interpretations), 2 full CDs of variations on it does seem a little excessive. With such a complex score, why not a few interpretations of some of the other themes? (I'd love to hear what Joel McNeely would do with the Main Title, or maybe Patrick Doyle's take on the Vesuvius Camp fanfare.)

At any rate, I hate to join the complaining, as I'm glad this release is possible. And again, I hope to get it before it's gone, but I had no idea it would be so expensive (although, as many have stated the price is reasonable for what we're getting), so we'll see.

That said, I actually am very interested in the documentary. And the score is an unquestionable masterpiece, so I'm glad it's been given such a grand treatment. And Varese can do what they want to; they don't owe anyone anything. But it would be nice if at some point they were to release a smaller, more affordable package for those who just want the score.

Reservations aside, congrats to Mr. Townson on the realization of his dream!

If you wanted a dozen apples, but the shop only sold them with a dozen bananas, a bag of tomatoes and a punnet of strawberries for 3 times the price of the apples alone...well, you get the point.

Did you say petulance? You didn't read the post you're replying to very carefully, did you?
