I must say, I've really been playing the life outta this CD.
Great themes in the bold, old-fashioned way.
It's one of those scores that keeps getting better with repeated plays. You hear something new with each go-through.
Not since the early LOST discs and SPEED RACER have I jazzed out to Giacchino this much.

This is a fan trailer edited by me a month before the movie's release starting from HD videos available on the web at the time (two trailers and some TV spots), assembled on the track "Sab Than Pursues the Princess" from the original soundtrack composed by Michael Giacchino.
This is a working version that still lacks dialogues and sound effects (except in the first part).

My purpose is not to create a story trailer, as was done skillfully by others, but rather to create an audio-visual editing that convey the fantasy-adventure essence of the Andrew Stanton's movie (feature totally absent from the trailer released by Disney in my opinion).

Finally picked up a copy of this at Amoeba Records over the weekend and have listened to the first few tracks... really excellent stuff so far!

I've listened through the album a few times so I'm pretty sure it's not there, but maybe I'm just missing it.

Is the music that plays during the chase from Zodanga on the CD? The tracks are in chronological order, and go right from Matai Shang's scene to the arena so it seems unlikely...

Watching the clip a few times, I really like the chase music! And I love the quiet soft rendition of John Carter's theme that plays as Woola happily slobbers all over him :-D

Today was the final showing of John Carter of Mars in Boston, so I went to experience it on the big screen one final time.

The music still was able to send shivers down my spine at the right moments. I'll never tire of seeing John Carter catch Dejah Thoris as she falls from her ship, as Giacchino's theme for John Carter crescendo's triumphantly!

What a pity we'll never hear what Giacchino could have done with The Gods of Mars frown

I was reading elsewhere that JOHN CARTER: THE GODS OF MARS will be produced after all. JOHN CARTER has made over 200 million in Europe, and DVD advance sales are already looking promising.

I hope this happens.

I'd love that logo up above on a t-shirt....

I hear ya. Looove the logo, and the way each heavy beat of the music plays as each letter appears at the end.

I've been able to find t-shirts with 4 different logos on the web. Check out "John Carter t-shrt" on Google, and there's a great place where you can get any number of different colors, with that great-looking "JCM" logo.

Yeah, that scene is missing from the album, and its a great little piece.

Finally got around to ordering this off Amazon. Glad I saw it on the big-screen before it got yanked.

Giacchino is probably the only "new" composer I get excited about anymore.

Ghost Protocol and M:I - 3 were fantastic.

I was curious about that, too. I can't find this online. Can you post a link?

I know that Marvel just released a comic book sequel, John Carter: The Gods Of Mars.

Disney fired their head of production. While he was not responsible for this film's massive failure, or even putting it into production, it's unlikely any film that forces Disney to take a $80-100 million write down will get a sequel.

Ryan's right. It is almost impossible to conceive that a film that took down the chairman of Walt Disney Pictures, that was the single biggest money loser of all time, would ever be green lit by any executive. $200 million outside the US sounds impressive, except the film needed to make upwards of three times that worldwide to just break even. Thus far, it has earned under $270 million worldwide (that is, including the US). It will make some money on home video, but that business has dried up considerably across the board. What would be in it for the next chairman of Disney to okay a sequel?

Granted, this opinion is coming from a guy who last year on the board explained at great length why "Star Trek: The Next Generation" on Blu-Ray was extremely unlikely. Time has proved me wrong about that. But I seriously doubt I'm wrong this time. Sorry.

Watched the movie today - I think it was pretty good, nowhere as bad as the reviews and B.O performance suggested. The script and pacing did leave something to be desired, but the cool CGI, performances and overall story nevertheless made it enjoyable enough.

Giacchino's score was really awesome - mixed prominently and really adding a lot to enhance the scenes. One thing I really appreciate is how he times the music in harmony with many minute actions onscreen, and still manages to avoid randomness and keep the piece integrally strong away from the visuals. I mostly used to play the action tracks in the score before watching the movie, but the more dramatic pieces like Carter They Come... and Ten Bitter Years have greatly risen in my favourites list now. Truly loved the scoring there.

Is there anyone on this board who is talented enough with graphic design to please take the album artwork and take out the giant bold yellow "JOHN CARTER" and replace it with either the JCM logo front and center, or "John Carter of Mars" using the font the movie originally marketed?

Something sort of like this, http://barsoomia.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/20120331-094437.jpg , but with "of Mars" as well.

I've tried in photoshop, but something like this isn't something I'm great at razz

I usually like my iTunes artwork and information to be exactly as how it was released, but with this I'm thinking "screw it" and renaming the album "John Carter of Mars", and desiring artwork to match.

I went back and saw this for the third time yesterday - I still can't believe that it bombed so badly. While Kitsch isn't the perfect actor for the role, Lynn Collins and others turned in great performances. And the music - I can't say enough about it. Giacchino wrote some great themes (especially for Dejah and John Carter) that give the movie a boost of energy and emotion. It comes out on DVD June 5th, and I highly encourage anyone and everyone to see it.

Thanks for rubbing the words out, Anthony! I'll try it again and post if I get a good result for anyone else who might want the same razz

I'm still mad at Disney for letting this fail. They had an absolute gold mine of material for a franchise, and they decided to just ignore it and let it die.
This was the movie I was looking forward to most for 2012, and I wasn't disappointed, because the movie itself was great, and had one of the best scores I've heard in the past several years!

In my opinion, this has been Giacchino's best work yet, and it will be hard to top this.

I think its a bit naive to blame the films failure on disney.Sure, their advertising for the film wasnt the best but its quite posible the film would have failed anyway.I saw the film and wasnt that impressed.Taylor Kitsch doesnt have what it takes to be a leading man and looked very scawny in the film.Wasnt he supposed to be a bad ass warrior? Its as if the director asked him to work out and beef up wheras it looks like he went on a no food diet. The action sequences were ok but nothing truly spectacular ( The arena battle was nowhere near as good as the one in Attack Of The Clones ten years ago ).And why does Dominic West keep getting hired? He is one BAD actor.

The film has its moments but is ultimately forgettable.Giacchinos score is excellent however.

Looking forward to picking up the Blu-Ray next week. John Carter is the most fun I've had at the theaters so far this year, and I really can't wait to see it again. Actually getting the BR/DVD combo so my parents can watch the DVD as well. Just wish I could have snagged a copy of the art book before it skyrocketed to outrageous prices. It's a shame we'll most likely never get a sequel. frown
