Oh and I don't suppose anyone has or knows where to get larger versions of the coverart for the Savina and Kloss I albums? Just thought it would be cool to have those as the covers for the appropriate albums.

Try here;

These print out rather well.

Savina: The original album release. Re-recorded.

Kloss I: A second re-recording of the same tracks of the Savina release but with differences and actually conducted by Rozsa himself (albeit not credited)

Kloss II: A kind of "more music from" album featuring additional re-recorded music that was not on Kloss I
Of course.... do I really need the Rhino set now?

Eggerty, I believe this is essentially correct, except that Rozsa's conducting of Kloss I (sans chorus) is not absolutely certain. He clearly did conduct Kloss II. The Rhino contains an impressive color booklet and notes that you may wish to retain. And it's an important piece of discographic history.

P.S. I've neither seen the film nor heard any previous incarnations of the score, so this is truly a virgin spin, and so far, it is GLORIOUS.

Glad to hear you like the music. But I wonder. Why did you lay out the big bucks now for a film score that you'd never heard and that has been available for years in less expensive formats? I'm guessing that you aren't a particular fan of Rozsa. Just curious . . .

Bravo, Basil! This is brilliant!

Silly Ben-Hur quotes for those consumed with jewel box complaints ...

Judah:
"It was an accident! I didn't try to break the jewel case. I'm not mad, I'm not a murderer!"

Arrius:
"You know a fleet of clumsy buyers has been breaking FSM's jewel cases. The emperor has honored us with the task of seeking out and replacing them".

Arrius: "Is the box square?"
Judah: "I can't tell..."
Arrius: "Better for us both if it's a Rhino long box".

Messala: "What have you in common with the rabble who make trouble here?"
Judah: "They're my fellow soundtrack buyers. I'm one of them".
Messala: Be wise Judah. It's a download world. If you want to avoid broken cases, you must become part of it".

Ilderim:
"One last thought... there is no law against poorly-made jewel cases. Many are broken".

Messala:
"What do you think you see... the smashed body of a wretched jewel case!"

Judah:
"Now I've returned it, as I swore I would".

Not sure what pixie dust FSM used, but the crystal clarity of the FSM BEN-HUR original tracks is, to my ears, head and shoulders above the Rhino set. It's a revelation.

Thanks, Dana, you're making me salivate. However, at the same time my mouth's going dry with fear that I may have ordered from the wrong place--Intrada. I can't seem to find my order on their site--indeed I don't even seem to be registered with them (I paid PayPal)--and they still list B-H as "out of stock". I've emailed them for a confirmation. Can anyone who's ordered from Intrada tell me if they've received their discs yet, or at least a shipping notice.

Of course, my woes are nothing compared to Steve's. smile

Actually I can't remember when I've ever laughed so much at a forum post. Members of my family even looked in to find out what was happening. To think we could get so much fun out of a wrecked jewel case (Steve excepted, of course). smile

On a similar note, I placed my order with moviemusic.com to save a few bucks for shipping (I didn't mind waiting a few days more).

Since they're almost sold out at SAE, that doesn't affect moviemusic's stock (since they will be shipping it in early March, I assumed it was something like, they buy a bunch from SAE to sell on their own site, but didn't know if that was definitely how it works in the soundtrack business), does it?

Since they're almost sold out at SAE...

According to who? I see no official announcement on the SAE site or in this tread. Sounds like fearmongering to me.

Only asking as I've been thinking about how to have this presented in iTunes. If the above is correct then I will have

Album 1: The complete film score + alternatives
Album 2: The Savina album
Album 3: Kloss I & II

Alternatively you could make a presentation of two albums, (either the Savina and the 'More Music' or the Kloss I and 'More Music') using this scheme:

Prelude
Star of Bethlehem
Adoration of the Magi
Gratus' Entry into Jerusalem
Friendship
House of Hur
Memories
Roman March
Messala's Revenge
Burning Desert
Rowing of the Galley Slaves
Victory Parade
Fertility Dance
Arrius' Party
Farewell to Rome
Return to Judaea
Love Theme of Ben-Hur
Mother's Love
Overture (to Act II)
Parade of the Charioteers
Bread and Circuses March
Death of Messala
Lepers' Search for the Christ
Sermon on the Mount
Valley of the Dead
Procession to Calvary
Golgotha
Christ Theme: 'Alleluia'
Miracle and Finale

This differs a little from the film order for the following reasons:

(a) Given there is no 'Overture' proper, and the Overture present is for Act II mostly, it's necessary to start with the Prelude... you have to have that 'Anno Domini' opening motif, the Nativity isn't dramatic enough to open with.

(b) 'Gratus' Entry' and Roman March are swapped because the Roman March is too abrupt to follow the nativity music and is too jarring. 'Gratus Entry' however starts with the same four notes as the film's title music on OST, so it sounds more fluid. Roman March works just as well in the other context, narratively.

(c) 'Memories' and 'Love Theme' are mostly (as Frank makes clear in his notes) mistitles of one another, so are reversed.

(d) The Overture, based as it is mostly on the Entr'Acte rejected, is placed at intermission.

(e) Bread and Circuses is placed after the Parade of the Charioteers since, as Rozsa makes clear in his notes, it's related in content mostly to the lap of victory scene.

(f) Since 'The Lepers' Search for the Christ' is based on four cues, and is mostly BEFORE the 'Sermon' as a cue, it fits easily here and follows on from Messala's death scene, as in the film. It segues better into the 'Sermon' with the same motif too.

(g) The 'Christ' Theme, though some think it might make a good Epilogue, belongs best before the 'Miracle', since it's clearly based on that.

Otherwise the natural sequence would be:

Overture
Star of Bethlehem
Adoration of the Magi
Prelude
Roman March
Friendship
House of Hur
Love Theme of Ben-Hur
Gratus' Entry into Jerusalem
Messala's Revenge
Burning Desert
Rowing of the Galley Slaves
Victory Parade
Fertility Dance
Arrius' Party
Farewell to Rome
Return to Judaea
Memories
Mother's Love
Bread and Circuses March
Parade of the Charioteers
Death of Messala
Sermon on the Mount
Valley of the Dead
Lepers' Search for the Christ
Procession to Calvary
Golgotha
Christ Theme: 'Alleluia'
Miracle and Finale

I can be as anal retentive as the next man.

Go to SAE and throw it in your shopping cart. Change the quantity value to an extremely high number - it'll max out at the number of units remaining.

However, it's entirely possible that FSM may have only pressed a certain number of units out of 2000, and the 260 or so units left may only represent that particular pressing run.

Since a couple of you enjoyed those, here's a quick encore...

Judah: "Where is Lukas Kendall? Where is... he?"
Messala: "Here within these walls. The jewel case will be replaced... he won't die. Of course, he WILL be pestered".
Judah: "Is it possible... is it possible you could do this to him?... a person you've known... a label you've loved".

Jailer: "Ben-Hur... FSM... 5CD sets..."
Drusus: "Yes, yes, they're the ones. When's the last time you saw them?
Jailer: Never... and I was one of the first to order. But they're coming alright... (opens his bank account page)... the money's disappeared".
(Opens mailbox) Da-Da-Da-Daaa...
Jailer: "Cracked!"
Drusus: (Aghast)
Jailer: They must be re-packaged and returned at once. Then we'll burn out the mailbox".

Judah: "Once before a jewel case failed me... I didn't know why then".

Judah: "I cannot believe God has let me spend $65, to cry over a cracked jewel case".
Arrius: "Your God has forsaken you. He has no more power over jewel case quality control than SAE".

Or you could set up several different playlists in iTunes so that you can listen to the music in any order that you wish.

Please stop, Basil! Not only is my stomach hurting, but I'm afeared I may not be able to watch (or rather listen to) the film the same way again. smile

Alright. Last one...

Old Man: "My table is not finished. Where is your son?"
Joseph: "He's walking to the mailbox".
Old Man: "He neglects his work, Joseph".
Joseph: "No. Once I reproached him with forgetting his work. He said to me 'I must check again to see if my replacement jewel case has arrived'."

Basil is the new Billy Crystal.

Funny, I don't remember ever laughing that much at Billy Crystal.

Though I must admit, his Oscars crack about millionaires handing out gold statuettes to each other in harsh economic times was pretty spot on.

Only asking as I've been thinking about how to have this presented in iTunes.

Someone did a *magnificent* job of entering the track titles on Gracenote or whatever it's called.

When importing the album to iTunes, I chose the "Ben-Hur" entry (not the "Ben-Hur (Complete Soundtrack Collection") and at the start of each track title it says "Savina Album" "First Kloss Album" and "Second Kloss Album". I'm very picky about track titles, and I only had to make one spelling correction, and a couple of anal changes like changing 1 to I. Oh and I had to change "Rózsa, Miklós" to "Miklós Rózsa" on one or two discs to get iTunes to put them together. Then I appended the title to include "(Complete Soundtrack Collection)" so iTunes wouldn't accidentally mix it with my Sony set.

Michael
