He's nowhere near the true greats, but he's probably the best of the newer breed.

Alex

I have yet to hear a Desplat score that I really liked.

Epiphany notwithstanding, I'd say it's unlikely to happen at this point, unless all other film music becomes worse and he improves for you solely by comparison. wink

For me easily the composer with the most interesting projects and career at the moment, I haven't heard many of his scores but those I have (mainly during live performances at Ghent WSA) impressed me. I've seen him interviewed couple of times and his background as well as working relationships are very interesting. I really need to catch up on his scores.

His music personifies the lame direction film scoring has taken, simply single melodic line, unoriginal orchestration, lack of any colorful counterpoint...et al ad nauseum.

Why am I not surprised? Are there any contemporary composers you do like?

Are you serious? He's the best (except for Williams and Morricone) we have just because he's the opposite of all the things you accuse him of.

Yeah, and one of the reasons I like things like GHOST WRITER or something like the UPSIDE OF ANGER is counterpoint (among many other things):

Maleficio - thank you for being the perfect example of a fan with one foot in the past and one in the present. More should follow such an example. Some of the criticisms above are so off target one can only conclude that in some quarters Desplat doesn't stand a chance, being neither dead nor American.

Hollywood should be on their knees thanking the film gods for Alexandre Desplat - as should those of us who only stand and wait (for the CD release). Condemning temp tracking? Spot on, mon ami. The English-speaking film world should also be hoping that M. Desplat proves more forgiving of Hollywood than Ennio. So far, so good.

And if there's nothing - NOTHING - in his varied and high quality repertoire that you like, then you can't have heard very much, or you're not approaching it with a sufficiently open mind. And that's my two pence worth.

Fantastic. It's such a pleasure to watch Desplat talk, he's pretty carismatic as well. As someone has said before we are lucky to have him composing music for films.

Seems like a good guy, just not a fan of his music. At all.

Desplat talking about haters and bad reviews:

He spoke of reading reviews for the recent Monuments Men, and with a smile on his face, talked about reading a review where it was stated that the worst part of the film was the music. “The music was meant to be a tribute,” he said.

My hand went up and I asked him how he feels about getting bad reviews at this point in his career. “There’s always something to learn from them,” he said. “You can’t please everyone, that’s a fact.” Laughing, he added, “Sometimes I cry for days.” He was teasing, of course, but it was interesting to note that even someone with such a talent can be criticized. I mean, I know this is a reality but it still intrigued me.

In another interview from 2011, he mentioned how he always tried to learn something, even from the dumbest comments about his work. You gotta appreciate his humbleness, to try to learn to get better, even by reading hate from dumb people (like in this post, and all the HP related ones).
