Epiphany notwithstanding, I'd say it's unlikely to happen at this point, unless all other film music becomes worse and he improves for you solely by comparison.

He's nowhere near the true greats, but he's probably the best of the newer breed.

I have yet to hear a Desplat score that I really liked.
Why am I not surprised? Are there any contemporary composers you do like?

His music personifies the lame direction film scoring has taken, simply single melodic line, unoriginal orchestration, lack of any colorful counterpoint...et al ad nauseum.
Are you serious? He's the best (except for Williams and Morricone) we have just because he's the opposite of all the things you accuse him of.

Desplat talking about haters and bad reviews:
He spoke of reading reviews for the recent Monuments Men, and with a smile on his face, talked about reading a review where it was stated that the worst part of the film was the music. “The music was meant to be a tribute,” he said.
My hand went up and I asked him how he feels about getting bad reviews at this point in his career. “There’s always something to learn from them,” he said. “You can’t please everyone, that’s a fact.” Laughing, he added, “Sometimes I cry for days.” He was teasing, of course, but it was interesting to note that even someone with such a talent can be criticized. I mean, I know this is a reality but it still intrigued me.
In another interview from 2011, he mentioned how he always tried to learn something, even from the dumbest comments about his work. You gotta appreciate his humbleness, to try to learn to get better, even by reading hate from dumb people (like in this post, and all the HP related ones).
